He opened it, then descended a short ladder.

“Atlas, jump,” Boone said.

The dog obeyed instantly.

Then Boone gestured for Gemma to go next.

Gripping the rungs, she carefully climbed down. The small space below was awash in blue light. She heard the clank of the trap door closing, then Boone followed her down.

She looked around and gasped.

There were six large computer screens on the wall. Shep sat in a chair in front of them.

All the screens showed video feed. Gemma squinted. Most of them displayed trees, and a few dirt roads.

On one, a dark truck was driving slowly down a road. On another, several black-clad figures moved stealthily through the trees.

“You’re a paranoid bastard,” Boone said.

“And it’s lucky that I am. We have four teams moving in from different locations. They tripped my sensors.”

“God.” She pressed a hand to her stomach.

“They must have gotten a hit off the tracker before I destroyed it,” Boone said.

Gemma made a sound. This was all her fault. Boone pulled her close, his strong arms tight around her.

“Can we leave?” she asked. “Just drive away?”

Shep shook his head. “There’s another team parked at the end of my driveway. We could go through the trees and hope to avoid the other teams who are converging.”

“But these guys are good,” Boone said.

Shep nodded.

“We need to hide Gemma, and make a stand.” Boone’s face sharpened. “End this, once and for all.”

Make a stand?“You’re going to fight them?”

Boone nodded.

Oh no. Her stomach dropped. “There are at least a dozen of them.”

“I’m in,” Shep said.

Boone swiveled her to look at him. “Gemma, you need to stay here. Whatever you hear, whatever happens, you can’t come out.”

Shep nodded. “Stay in here and stay quiet.”

“Wait.” Boone leaned forward. “Shep, zoom in on the truck.”

His friend tapped the keyboard. Then both men cursed.

“What?” she demanded.

Boone’s face looked the grimmest she’d ever seen. “They have RPGs.”

Her eyes widened. “Missiles?”
