I bit my lip.Stay safe, big guy.

Somehow Colt and his daughter were becoming the center of my universe. I wondered if my mom had been wrong. Colton and Daisy, what I felt for them, seemed like the biggest and best adventure. They made me feel safe, happy. They felt like home. I didn’t feel like I was trapped or missing out.

I cleaned the kitchen, and then met my security guard for the walk to the office. As we walked down the sidewalk, I plucked at my cute, red capri pants. They were a pop of color that I loved. I’d topped them with a simple black shirt.

In the office, I turned on the radio and headed for my desk. Thankfully, there were no horrid emails with ugly pictures from Scott today. I didn’t make the assumption that he’d given up. No, he was out there, biding his time.

I popped up a news website on my computer. There were a few articles about Wayne Cullen and a photo of Colt, along with talk about him joining the hunt for the fugitive. He looked so good in the photo, mid-stride, scowl on his face. A man who knew what he was doing and would see it through to the end.

The morning was a blur of filing, phone calls, and invoices. I’d just finished eating a turkey sandwich for lunch, when a breaking news bulletin flashed across my computer screen.

Escaped rapist caught.

My heart hit my ribs so hard it hurt. I tapped the keyboard, just as a report came on.

“Infamous and violent rapist, Wayne Cullen, has finally been caught by well-known, local bounty hunter, Colton Fury.”

My smile was huge. Colt had done it. He’d captured Cullen.

Video footage flashed on screen of Colt stalking out of a building. He ignored the cameras. My belly flip-flopped. He looked so hot. A breeze ruffled his hair, and he had a scowl in place. Not to mention that walk of his.

All mine.

The reporter came back on. “Unfortunately, it took another attack for authorities to catch Cullen.”

Oh, no. As the reporter detailed how Cullen had broken into a woman’s home, I pressed a hand to my chest.

A part of Colt would blame himself for not being fast enough.

“Thankfully, Colton Fury interrupted the attack. The victim is alive and in the hospital in a stable condition. And today, the city of New Orleans will breathe a sigh of relief that Wayne Cullen is once again behind bars. The New Orleans PD are working extra hard to ensure he stays there.”

I closed the website. I was so proud of Colt. I needed to make sure he understood that. He’d done the entire city a favor.

And now he’d come back and get to work finding Scott.

I glanced out the window. Cars and people passed by.

Where are you, Scott?I wanted the shadow of him hanging over me gone.

My heart squeezed. I wanted a life with Colt.

Oh boy. I pressed my palm to my belly where it turned over with fear and excitement.

Maybe my mom had been wrong. Maybe I could have more. Maybe I could find my forever.

COLT

As I exited New Orleans police headquarters, I saw all the news vans and scowled.

Damn vultures.

They love to pick over the carcass of a situation. Glorify all the gory details, traumatize all the victims again, all in the name of the public deserving the truth.

And I’d be made out to be a fucking hero.

I stomped toward my SUV. I felt a big dose of relief and satisfaction that Cullen was back behind bars. No more young women would be violated or killed.
