Colt will be fine.

There was an email from an unfamiliar sender called ForYou99. The subject said For Macy. Frowning, I opened it.

Then my body froze, and the tang of bile filled my mouth.

There were photos…of me. But not of me. The horrible pictures showed a woman tied up, handcuffed, bloody. Her body was naked, and my head had been photoshopped onto her.

My stomach whirled sickeningly, and for a second, I worried I’d need the trashcan under my desk so I could be sick.

I took a deep breath. In for four, hold, and out for four. I did it again, and the urge to hurl passed. I made myself look at the pictures again.

There was some text as well.

You’re mine, Macy. We’ll have so much fun. Just like we used to.

Despair welled. Why was he doing this? I pressed my hands flat to the desk. I knew this wasn’t my fault, that it was all on Scott.

My first instinct was to tell Colt. But he needed to stay focused. Scott wanted us upset and off-balance.

I could tell Reath, but I knew he’d tell Colt. Colt would lose his mind.

Straightening in my chair, I clicked delete.

“Okay?”

I managed, by the smallest amount, not to jolt. I glanced up at Reath in the doorway. I couldn’t show any reaction, or he’d know. The way he was watching me, I guessed he already knew something.

“I’m fine.” I pasted on a smile. “The usual spam to give my delete finger a workout.” I wiggled my pointer finger. “You want some coffee? I’ll put on a pot.”

“Sure.”

I tugged on my ear. “When do you think we’ll hear from Colt?”

“When he has time to call. He’ll be busy for a bit.”

I nodded, fiddling with my hair.

“He’s good at his job, Macy. He’ll be fine.”

“I know.”

“In the meantime, I’ll work on finding Warner.”

“Thanks. I know this is all so much trouble.”

Without making a sound, Reath appeared right at the edge of my desk. The man really could move quietly.

“It’s no trouble at all. Get that out of your head. My brothers and I protect what’s ours. That includes you.”

I pressed a hand to my churning belly. “I’m not used to having someone look out for me.”

He leaned down. “Get used to it.”

“How can I ever repay you all? Repay Colt?”

“We don’t want payment, Macy. We want you safe.” He paused. “If you want to do something for Colt, just be there for him when he gets back. These jobs, they’re never easy. It takes a toll.”

I frowned. “He’s always seemed fine in the past.”
