“She’s just a pawn, Colt. Scott used her.”

I ran a hand through my hair, then sighed. “Get her out of here.”

Reath nodded, then waved to Marsha.

The woman rose, tears in her eyes. “I’m sorry.”

Tension vibrated inside me. Then Macy wrapped her arms around me. I breathed her in and relaxed.

“I need to find Warner.” He couldn’t hide forever. It was time to step things up.

“Let’s just go home for now, okay?”

I couldn’t say no to her, and even more so, that was exactly where I wanted her. “Okay.”

Stirring a pot full of deliciousness on the stove, I took in a lungful of glorious scent.

Lola had made us shrimp and sausage gumbo. My stomach was rumbling.

After talking to Marsha, we’d come back for a late lunch with Daisy. The little girl was now asleep in the main house with Lola. She was starting school tomorrow. I’d read her three stories, Colt had read her two. I smiled. The girl was talented at drawing out bedtime.

Now we were waiting for Dante and Mila to arrive for a late dinner. I stirred the gumbo. I was pretty sure Colt had invited them to try and keep me distracted.

I blew out a breath. Scott really wanted to hurt me. Getting that woman to feed me coconut… It was just crazy.

I was scared, but it was tempered by the fact that Colt was taking care of me. My grump could be pretty sweet. I pulled out some plates. I realized how comfortable I was getting in his place after only a few days. It had been very domestic, hanging out with Daisy, making and eating meals together.

Like a family.

I rubbed my chest. It had always just been mom and me. The two musketeers. But having a bigger group of people to care about…

It didn’t feel like the anchor my mom had always said it would be. Holding you back from living life and going places.

Today, I’d liked being with Colt. And Daisy.

And last night… I shivered. Yes, I’d really liked that.

A hard body pressed against my back, and I tilted my head. “Hello.”

“Hey.” He pushed my hair to one side, and dropped a kiss to my bare shoulder. I’d changed into a maxi dress. I loved the halter top and long skirt. It had a pretty floral pattern of red poppies.

Colt snaked an arm around me, and splayed his hand over my belly. It felt like forever since he’d touched me. His teeth scraped my neck and I gasped.

“I have plans for you later,” he murmured.

I gripped his forearms. “Really?”

“Yes. You going to be a good girl for me?”

I spun and met his gaze. “No.”

With a groan, he lowered his head. I slid my arms around his neck and kissed him back. Things were just getting interesting when I heard a throat clearing.

I looked up. Dante and Mila were standing there, grinning at us.
