“You were aboy. There was nothing you could have done.”

I made a sound.

“Colt.” She pressed in closer. “Would you expect Daisy to stop a fight between two brawling adults?”

Horror filled me. “No.”

She arched a brow.

Scraping a hand through my hair, I blew out a breath. “He went to jail.”

“And you went into the system.”

“Yeah. Then years later, I found out that my father had another child. With his prison-bride pen pal. She was one of those people who fall in love with inmates. They had a daughter. Chrissy.”

“Daisy’s mom.”

I nodded. “Chrissy didn’t have much stability. My dad was absent, obviously. And her mom was a flake. I connected with Chrissy when she was almost sixteen. She was already using drugs.”

“You tried to help her.”

“I took her to rehab so many times.” I gripped my thighs. I had so many fucking regrets where my sister was concerned. “When she was clean, she was amazing. Funny, caring, with a wicked sense of humor.” I’d had a sister. A blood family member who actually gave a shit about me. “Then, she went off the rails again.”

Macy’s hand slid up to the back of my neck and squeezed.

“I was trying to get her to go back to rehab, but she told me I was bossy, always in her business.” That wasn’t even close to the vile shit Chrissy had spewed. I knew it had been the drugs talking, but it still hurt. “So finally I left her alone. I decided to wait until she came to me and asked for help.”

Macy leaned her head against my shoulder, and I smelled berries.

“She never did.” My tone was flat, devoid of emotion. “She ODed. She’d managed to get clean for a while when she was pregnant with Daisy. She had no idea who the father was. But even after holding that amazing life she’d made in her hands, the demons got to her.” I paused. “I failed her.”

“No,” Macy said strongly.

“Shouldn’t have given up.”

“No, Colt.” She pulled my face to the side to look at her. “You can’t help someone who doesn’t want your help. You did everything you could.”

I covered her hand with mine. “You have to let me help you.”

“I will.” Her hands tightened on my cheeks. “I promise.”

“You can’t get hurt, Macy.”

“I won’t.”

My gaze dropped to her plump lips. She was so close. I could smell her, see those freckles on her skin, feel the press of her against me.

Shit. “I don’t do relationships. I can’t. Daisy is my number one priority, and nothing comes before her.”

“You could never fail that little girl. You love her, and she loves you.”

I pulled Macy closer until her breasts were against my arm. My cock stood up and took notice.

This close, I could see the desire in her eyes.

“Colt.” A low whisper.

I felt something snap inside me. She’d been chased, frightened, could’ve been hurt. I could have lost her. This chance could have been snatched away.
