She’d given me her usual smile when I picked her up today, but a few times I’d found her staring off into space at her desk, a worried look on her face.

Macy didn’t do worried. I’d never met anyone as relentlessly and annoyingly optimistic in my life.

One other thing was wrong. She hadn’t left me any origami today.

“Macy?”

She jolted. “Colt? Do you need something?”

“Are you all right?”

She straightened. “I’m fine.”

“How are your elbows and hands?”

She held her hands up. “They’re just grazes. I’m made from tough stuff.”

I’d tried to find the truck that had hit her, but there hadn’t been any CCTV in front of the coffee shop. I scowled. The fucker deserved a talking-to.

There was a knock at the front door. “Special delivery.”

My brother Reath stepped inside, holding Daisy’s hand.

“Hi, Daddy. Hi, Macy.” She skipped in and hugged me. “Macy, are your boo-boos all right today?”

“They sure are, sweetheart.”

It was the first real smile I’d seen on her. I felt a tug in my chest, and found myself a little envious that my daughter was on the receiving end of it.

“Thanks for watching Daisy this morning,” I said to Reath.

“Always a pleasure.” Reath winked at Daisy. “I am her favorite uncle, after all.”

Daisy blew him a kiss.

“And the kid is a whiz on the computer.”

“I’m going to be a hacker when I grow up,” Daisy announced.

I stiffened. “What?”

“With a cool code name and everything. I’m gonna work for Uncle Reath.”

Macy giggled, and I scowled at her. She elbowed me and lowered her voice. “She wanted to be a ballerina last week. Don’t get too worried, Daddy.”

I got a whiff of berries, and barely resisted the urge to sniff her hair.

“Hey, Daisy. Look.” Macy drew a piece of colored paper out of her desk drawer. Her fingers moved methodically as she folded. She had small, delicate fingers.

In my head, I imagined them all over my skin—pretty gold against my darker tone.

Fuck.

The last thing I needed was a hard-on with my daughter and brother in the room. Especially my ex-CIA brother, who rarely missed a thing.

Sure enough, Reath was eyeing me with a speculative gaze. He looked at Macy, then back at me, and grinned.

Scowling, I barely resisted giving him the finger. Reath loved to push buttons.
