Then the agent stalked off on her long legs.

“What did you do to piss her off?” I asked.

“Nothing.” Kav was still watching her walk away. “Yet.”

“But you’ve met before.”

Kav’s lips curled. “Oh, yes. The lovely agent and I have crossed paths.” Then he turned. “I need some fried chicken, and a glass of that Chardonnay I brought.”

I watched him cast one last glance at the agent before he headed toward the picnic blanket.

Macy stood there grinning at Kav’s back.

“What’s going on in that head of yours, sunflower.” I squeezed the back of her neck.

“Did you see the way Kav watched her? And the way she stood up to him? She didn’t fawn or simper all over him like most women do.”

My eyebrows went up. “You think my brother likes the treasury agent who’s clearly out to get him?”

“Yep.”

That was my Macy, always looking for the good in things.

She snuggled in against my side. “Now, how about a quick walk around the fountain—” she lowered her voice “—so I can kiss you out of view of everybody?”

I smiled. “Sounds good to me.”

She could ask me anything, and I’d give it to her.

Carrying my cute little watering can, I watered the plants around the office.

Life was…amazing. I poured some water on my favorite orchid. Being with Colt was not all unicorns and rainbows. He was still my grump, and we were learning to live together—two people used to doing things our own way.

I smiled and set the can down on my desk. Colt was learning to compromise, and I loved coaxing smiles out of my grumpy bounty hunter. It was Daisy I’d been worried about, but needlessly, as it turned out. The little girl had accepted my presence in their home with a beaming smile.

The only downside to my amazing life this week was that Colt was away. He’d been called up for a job in Texas.

But I knew he’d come home to us when he was done. While he was away, Lola, Colt’s brothers, and Mila made sure we were never alone.

It felt nice to have a home filled with laughter, people, and warmth.

And love.

“Mom, I found the best adventure of all.” I smiled. I knew she’d be happy for me. “He’s perfect for me. We balance each other out.”

The office door opened, and I whirled.

Colt filled the doorway—as hot as always in well-worn jeans and a black Henley.

“You’re home!” I ran and leaped.

He caught me, smiling down at me.

Then he kissed me.
