COLT

A few weeks later

“Ican’t believe we’re having a picnic,” Beau rumbled.

I bit into a sandwich. “It was Macy’s idea, and Daisy was one hundred percent behind it.”

“And whatever Macy and Daisy want, you give it to them.”

“Yep.” I glanced over to where my girls were running across the grass with a kite. They hadn’t managed to get it in the air yet, but they were still having fun. We were at Audubon Park in Uptown. Macy had wanted to have a “goodbye to summer” picnic.

My gaze snagged on her legs. She was wearing tiny shorts that had me imagining sliding them off her later. We were officially living together. We’d moved all her stuff in. She’d already added throw cushions to the couch, more furniture, vases filled with flowers, and other stuff. She was making it a home.

Ours.

I nudged the picnic basket closer to Beau. He was lounging on the picnic blanket beside me. “There’s some of Lola’s fried chicken in there. Enjoy some food and quit bitching.”

Beau loved Lola’s fried chicken. Without a word, he dug in.

I spotted Mila and Dante walking under some oak trees nearby, holding hands. I couldn’t remember ever seeing my brother so happy. I got it now.

My gaze went back to Macy and Daisy. Kav was with them, trying to get the kite in the air. So far they’d spent more time running around. He was wearing khaki shorts and a loose, white linen shirt. Even when he was dressed in casual gear, he still looked rich. I made a mental note to give him hell about it later.

“Happy?”

Reath appeared from nowhere beside me. “Yeah. I am.”

“So being in a relationship is worth the risk.”

“It is. It’s not always easy.” When Macy noticed me looking at her, she smiled. Every time I saw her smile, it lit things up inside me. I was whipped and I didn’t care one bit. “She fucking holds my heart in her hands. It’s as scary as hell.”

“She looks sweet,” Reath said, “but she’ll protect it fiercely.”

“I know.” And it was my job to keep her happy. And safe.

I’d do whatever I had to do to keep both my girls smiling, singing, and giggling.

I saw Macy reach out and ruffle Daisy’s hair. She loved my little girl. And I loved that Daisy had someone else in her life who would be there for her. Always.

“You and Macy going to give Daisy a little brother or sister?” Beau asked.

“What?” I felt like I’d been hit with an electric shock.

Beau grinned over some chicken. “Don’t tell me you hadn’t thought about it?”

I hadn’t. I’d just been so wrapped up in Macy that I hadn’t thought past having her in my place, in my bed. I felt a bit lightheaded as I watched her. Instantly, I could picture her round with a baby. My baby.

Shit. Fuck.

“He looks like you punched him with your famous Beauden Fury combo.” Reath sounded amused.

“We have time.” But yeah, I wanted a baby. One we’d make together. Daisy would love it, and be a brilliant big sister.

Leaving my brothers, I headed across the grass. Kav was untangling the kite string from around Daisy’s legs. My daughter was giggling. I slipped an arm around Macy and kissed her.

“I told you a picnic was an excellent idea,” she said.
