We’re only a few minutes down the road when I realize this is the most time I’ve spent in Derek’s company alone, possibly ever, and it’s doing nothing to rid me of my misplaced lust.

Who am I kidding, I passed up lust a long ass time ago and nestled right into a barbed bush of unrequited love. And these thorns are getting sharper by the minute.

GUNS BLAZING

DEREK

In front of the diner we’ve pulled into for lunch, I notice Will fiddle with her purse strap several times unnecessarily.

“Everything okay?” I ask, making sure she’s not uncomfortable.

“Yeah,” she says. “I’m good.”

Inside, we’re seated at a booth next to the window and I have a clear view of my car on the street, which makes me feel better. You never can be too careful with street parking. I’ve been side swiped enough times to know.

“What are you going to order?” I ask Will, bringing my menu up to browse myself.

“I think I want a BLT,” she says. “And lots of fries.”

“That sounds amazing,” I say. “I might have the same.”

“You can’t get the same thing as me,” she says.

“Why not?” I ask, tilting my head to the side as I glance up at her face.

“Everyone knows when you’re getting sandwiches somewhere that you should get different ones and share.” She says this like it’s some sort of universal law.

For the record, I’ve never heard of this sandwich law of hers, but I think I like it. “We’re going to share sandwiches?” I ask, a teasing, slightly flirtatious tone in my voice.Where did that come from?

Her eyebrows raise on her forehead at my question. “Um, I mean, only if you want to.” She clears her throat uncomfortably, as if I’ve caught her off guard, and I probably have. Hell, I caught myself off guard.

“Sounds like a great idea,” I say, hoping to put her at ease.

When the waitress comes by, we order two Cokes, a BLT, a turkey melt, and a double order of fries to share.

“So,” I edge. “How was your date with Joe?” I paused right before I said his name. I couldn’t remember for a second, despite how common it is.

Will shifts in her seat, pushing her back against the booth wall, her head tilting side to side somewhat thoughtfully. “It was okay.”

“Just okay?” I challenge.

The waitress drops our drinks on the table and Will immediately takes a sip, like she’s trying to stall. “Yeah.” She shrugs. “Not great, not terrible.”

Her answer leaves me wanting to ask more questions, but the two of us have never been particularly deep with each other. Most conversations never dip past just below the surface of whatever topic we’re discussing.

“Well, that’s not what you want on a first date,” I tsk.

“It isn’t?” She takes another long sip of her Coke, then taps the straw between her teeth absentmindedly.

“Of course not,” I say. “Life is too short for just okay. You need passion. You need fireworks. You need bang.”

“Bang?” she asks.

“Yeah. Bang,” I say. “Like a gun. Like you got shot by love’s bullet.”

“Isn’t it love’s arrow?” she asks, laughing.

“Cupid upgraded, okay?” I laugh too.
