Carmelo watched the black sedan slowly cruise off down the street again. Carmelo breathed out a long held breath when it turned and disappeared from view. They could all fuck off and leave them alone.

He came back into the room. Lena glanced up at him nervously.

He put his hand on her head and tickled her cheek like she was doing to Cal. “You’re fine Princess, we got the day to ourselves. They won’t be following.”

She smiled and said a quiet, humble, “Thank you.”

He smiled, knowing it wasn’t just for shooing Kavan away for the moment. It was for letting her in, in the first place, for providing a sanctuary, for being a safe place for her. It was almost like she knew about what Carmelo had been wrestling with over the last few days, and was thanking him for forgiving her. Maybe he should tell her, maybe they could track down who did this and they could work it out together. Maybe they should be honest with each other from the start. The start of what? His brain promptly followed up with. His heart stuttered, suddenly feeling exposed.

He spoke softly, “I don’t know what you were hoping for when you came here…”

She bit her lip. “To be honest, neither do I, but I just knew it would be good for me to see you, so I headed this way.”

He flexed his jaw. “You want to hang out today? With me?” He felt shy, asking directly. Sure, they were engaged, he’d seen her come and licked and sucked and teased every inch of her naked body and she’d gagged on his cock and trembled in his arms but… somehow this felt more intimate.

“Yeah.” She looked up at him timidly. “Only if you’d want to… if you are free to, I mean, or…”

“Can you give me half an hour here to just finish my workout and then… we can go out for something to eat, take Cal for a walk…”

She blinked up at him.

“I mean, I know it’s nothing fancy-” Carmelo immediately felt the need to backtrack.

“I’d like that very much.” She was being so polite and calm and demure, he barely recognized her.

He wanted to reassure her, he could see uncertainty, he sensed tension and angst, hidden carefully under a meticulously constructed veil of a sunshine disposition and an immaculate turn out. “Me, too.” Was all he was able to muster up because his chest was hurting weirdly. It felt tight and hot and his face felt flushed and his heart was pounding.

She beamed up at him and stood.

“Finish your work out then, Sergeant, I’ll watch.” She poked her tongue out playfully.

He laughed. “Oh great, that will really help me concentrate, huh, you making me feel all self conscious-”

“Come on,you?Self-conscious?” She blew a raspberry. “Not possible.”

He looked down. “Hey, I can be self-conscious, okay?”

She pursed her lips, trying to stop a smile. “Shall I face the other way, would that help?”

He matched her face. “Yes Princess, that would help.”

She raised her eyebrows. “Fine, well may I use your bathroom and then maybe I’ll sit out on your balcony in the sun for a bit…”

“Sure, bathroom’s off the hallway. As I said, I wasn’t expecting company, especially not my mafia princess bride, it’s messy-” It was his turn to poke his tongue out.

“Pfft well, I’m not marrying you,” she said with a quirk of her eyebrow, “and Mr. Golden Boy cop hasn’t cleaned his bathroom? What a crime, call 911,” she joked dryly. “We’d get a maid.”

“Oh would we now? You think my salary can stretch to a maid?” He went along with the joke.

“No,” she said haughtily, “mine can.”

He dropped his head and shook it, smiling.

“Get me a glass of ice water and set up a chair out there in the sun for me, Sergeant,” she commanded him with a smirk.

“I… yes, my Princess.” He huffed and rolled his eyes in jest as she glided out of the room.

And they’d spent the rest of the morning and afternoon in a low-key, idyllic state of actually enjoying each other’s company. Carmelo was as surprised as he was delighted. He’d finished his workout, showered, pumped himself quickly and forcefully and had come with a ragged desperation that almost hurt. They got in his car, and he drove her into town, taking her to a brunch cafe where they’d had avocado toast, poached eggs and freshly ground coffee. Cal had sat diligently at their feet but then they took him through the park and let him off the lead, and Cal had bounded around in endless joy and fascination, chasing flies and sniffing at leaves and generally embracing a lovely, sunny day. As had Carmelo.
