“Kidnapping a man will put our business at risk.”

“You’re overreacting. I’ve done this before.”

“Yes,withoutconsulting me, and it failed spectacularly.”

“This is my house. What happens here does not concern you or the club. Anthony is where he belongs. I will treat him well, and in one month, he will decide if he wants to stay or leave.”

“You... you’re mental.” Ethan jumped to his feet. “Fuck your money and fuck you. Get him back here or—”

Dima pulled out his gun and aimed it at Ethan. Chris had a flashback of what happened at the cabin, but Jay’s gun hadn’t been loaded, and Dima’s surely was.

“I don’t want to handle the police,” Oscar said.

“Since Jay is still on probation, I’m sure he shares your sentiment,” Tobias said, making it clear he had done his research. He told Jay, “I have evidence of you planting recording equipment in my office. Don’t risk your freedom for this.”

Silence filled the room. Chris stared at the briefcase, not believing any of this was real.I gave him my word that I wouldn’t let this happen again.

“Okay,” Jay finally said. “One month. But keep your briefcase and transfer the money to my bank account instead. I’ll send you the details later.”

“Are you sure?”

“I ain’t walking around with a briefcase full of cash.”

Ethan sharply turned to Jay. “Are you insane? We’re not—”

“I’m not going back to prison because of one month. Anthony knew the risks. Let’s go. I’m sick of this place.”

They walked outside into the quiet street, the night air chilly.

“We need to talk,” Chris said.

“Not here.” Jay kept walking. “They might be watching.”

When they reached the end of the street, they turned to the right on Summer Walk and kept walking until they reached a small coffee shop that was almost empty and would likely close soon.

“Here.” Jay sat at one of the tables outside, and Chris and Ethan sat in front of him. From inside the coffee shop, Rocket Man by Elton John was playing.

“He’s fucking insane.” There was a wild look in Ethan’s eyes, making Chris worried he might have been pushed too far. “If we call the police, he won’t want to get into even more trouble by exposing us.”

Jay nodded. “Yes, calling the police is an option.”

“The last option,” Chris said, fully expecting Tobias to go ahead with his threat. Chris wasn’t going to leave Anthony there no matter what, but he was also not sending Jay back to prison if there could be another way. There was also the possibility of the police not finding Anthony in that house, the same way Chris hadn’t been able to find Tobias’s secret apartment for days.

“Should we call Mickey?” Jay asked Chris.

“I’m not sure he’ll be able to do anything. He’ll probably tell us to wait a month.”

Ethan leaned his face in his hands. “I can’t believe this is happening. They could be torturing him in there.”

“Tobias will take his time with him,” Chris said and rubbed Ethan’s back. “Hurting Anthony now won’t serve any purpose.”

“I don’t think any of us is qualified to guess what that madman might do.”

“We’ll fix this,” Jay said. “We underestimated him, but now he’s underestimatingus.” He placed his backpack on the table. After checking no bystanders were looking, he shoved his hand deep inside and pulled out a gun, the same one he had aimed at them at the cabin.

“Is it loaded?” Ethan asked quietly.
