“Why?” I growl again, because this asshole is really trying my patience.

“I still care about her,” he says, his voice barely above a whisper. “We didn’t end things on good terms, but I never stopped thinking about her. When I saw her again, I just… I don’t know, I thought we could pick up where we left off.”

My anger simmered up a notch, but it’s nowhere near where it needs to be for me to deal with this piece of shit.

“You thought you could pick up where you left off?” I ask, taking a menacing step closer to him.

“Yeah.”

“You hurt her,” I say, my voice cold, devoid of emotion.

“I know. I’m so, so sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt her, I swear. I was just trying to get her attention. I didn’t realise she was with someone—”

“She told you to stop. She said no. Called her a whore.”

He winces. “I know. I swear to God, I know. I promise you, I would never hurt her.”

“Not consciously, maybe, but this isn’t the first time,” I say, my voice dripping with disgust. “If you ever come near her again, if you ever so much as talk to her, I will not hesitate to kill you.”

“I won’t, I swear. I just want her to be happy. I just need to know she’s okay.”

“She’s better without you in her life than in it,” I growl. “Disappear back to wherever the fuck you came from.”

“Thank you,” he says, closing his eyes in relief. “I will. I’ll go right away. You’ll never see me again.”

“Shehad better not ever see you again.”

“Absolutely. Yes. That’s what I meant.”

I sigh, knowing that I can’t kill this guy just for getting a bit rough with her – even though I want to.

“Fine. I’ll leave the door unlocked. Once you get yourself free from that chair, you can fuck off.”

“Wait!” He cries as I turn to leave. “What will I tell my wife?”

I spin back around and look at him with total disgust. “You have a wife?” I spit.

He nods. “And kids. W-what will I tell them about my injuries?”

It takes every ounce of self control not to pull the trigger on him – because honestly I think I’d be doing his family a favour – and close the gap between us in three strides. He seems to realise he’s fucked up because he shrinks away from me. I grab the front of his shirt, jerking him towards me and pull his wallet and phone from inside his jacket.

I drop the phone on the floor, crushing it under the heel of my boots, before pulling the cash and cards from his wallet and dropping it on the floor. I pocket the cards and cash.

“Tell them you were mugged. It’s true enough.”

“I have to get home to them! It’s nearly Christmas and they’re all waiting for me in Edinburgh!”

“Then I suggest when you wake up, you get yourself free and start running.”

“W-wake up?”

I bring the butt of the pistol down heavily on his temple and he blacks out. North chuckles.

“I was too lenient,” I mutter, stalking past him and wiping the blood from my split knuckles on the thighs of my jeans. “Way too fucking lenient.”

CANDY

The men file out of the room, leaving me alone with the file and my thoughts. I take a deep breath and open it again, determined to start filling out the checklist.
