“Hey,” I say softly, trying to put her at ease.

“Hi,” she replies, her voice barely above a whisper.

“North told me about the vandalism at your place,” I say, trying to get the conversation going. “Do you want to talk about it?”

Candy looks down at her feet and takes a deep breath. “It’s just some stupid kids,” she says, her voice shaking. “They broke into my apartment and wrecked everything.”

“It is not kids,” Don growls out. “Kids wouldn’t target two different locations. This was personal.”

“Calm down Don,” I chastise him. “You’re making her uncomfortable.”

“I’m fine,” Candy says, trying to sound stronger than she is. “It’s just been a rough couple of days.”

“Well, you’ll be safe here,” I say, trying to reassure her. She smiles weakly.

“We’ll get this sorted,” Don adds. “Whatever happened to your apartment will be dealt with.” He puts his arm aroundCandy’s shoulder and she leans into him, seeking comfort. “You’re safe here.”

“I didn’t realise you all lived here,” Candy says, giving me a soft, tentative smile.

“Yeah. We all have our own places too, but we mostly stay here.”

No need to explain to Candy that we each keep our own flats for entertaining women. Not that I can remember the last time I even used mine.

“Come in, can I get you a drink? Do you have any bags you need me to put in your room?”

“Just me, my best friend’s dress, and some expensive hooker heels,” she replies sadly, holding up the shoes in her hand and trying for a smile.

“Don’t worry about it. You want something to change into? Dash or Frost would have something you could borrow that would probably be the closest fit.”

“She can wear one of my shirts,” Don growls out.

“It’ll drown her,” I scoff, trying to hide my annoyance.

“I’m fine,” Candy interjects. “But I am really tired.”

“I’ll show you to your room,” Don and I both say at the same time. He glowers at me and Candy laughs nervously.

“Umm, thanks?”

Don leads the way and I follow behind, trying to ignore the tension between us. As we approach the guest room, Candy’s eyes widen at the sight of the luxurious space.

“This is your room for as long as you need,” Don says, gesturing to the king-sized bed and upscale furnishings. Candy’s eyes widen.

“The bathroom’s through there. It’s all yours and there’s fresh towels and things, it’s fully stocked.”

“Thank you so much,” Candy says, her voice cracking with emotion. “I don’t know what I would do without you guys.”

“We’re just happy to help,” I say, forcing a smile.

Don clears his throat, his eyes darkening as he steps closer to Candy. “Is there anything else we can do for you?” he asks, his voice low and husky.

Candy looks up at him, her eyes widening as she takes in the predatory gleam in his eyes. Despite myself, I feel a pang of jealousy deep in my chest.

“No, I’m fine,” Candy says quickly, her voice shaking. “Thank you both so much. I’m just going to get some rest. I have work later, you know.”

She quickly slips into the room, closing the door softly behind her. Don turns to me, his expression unreadable.

“She’s off-limits,” he growls out, his tone leaving no room for argument.
