“Are you okay?” Don demands, fists still curled in a fighting stance, chest heaving.

I nod quickly, too shaken to find my voice.

“Your throat is bruised.”

My hands fly to my neck and my eyes widen. “I-I didn’t think he had hold of me that hard.”

“Your forehead is fucking bleeding. He’s lucky he’s still alive,” he seethes, kicking Aiden in the crotch as he steps closer to me.

“It is?” My fingers go to where I banged it and sure enough they come away sticky and wet. “Shit. I’m sorry.”

“Don’t you dare fucking apologise!” Don growls.

I jump at the ferocity in his voice. “S-sorry,” I whisper, looking at the ground and willing those damn tears not to fall. Everything in my vision is blurry and I can’t locate my dress.

A sob breaks free, and Don swears softly under his breath.

“Shit, I’m sorry, Candy. I didn’t mean—”

“No,” I interrupt him. “It’s okay. I’m sorry for causing trouble. I’m sorry for making you do all this.”

“I’m not.”

He tears a strip of material from the bottom of his white T-shirt and passes it to me, nodding to the cut to indicate I should use the material to stem the bleeding. I follow his silent orders, grimacing at the sting when I apply pressure. That’s when it dawns on me that Don has changed clothes from what he had on earlier.

A second later he drapes a blanket from the bed around my shoulders, tucking it tight around my body and I let him. Eventhough I’m so messed up and confused on the inside, my body is frozen and I’m having trouble breathing.

“Candy, look at me.” He takes my face in both his hands and I do as he says. “You’re not in danger. He won’t lay a finger on you again. I won’t let him.”

“You hit him,” I say.

“I did. I had to get him away from you and to take you out of immediate danger.” His hand is still on my face. He seems to be studying me. “How are you feeling?”

I open my mouth to lie to him but I can’t. Not when he’s examining me like this. “Scared. Confused.”

“Do you need to see a doctor?”

“No.”

“Don’t lie to me.”

I shake my head. “What are you doing here, Don?”

“It’s my job to keep people safe, Candy. That includes the staff. Itespeciallymeans the staff, though things like this never normally happen here. I didn’t like the look of that guy all night, especially when he didn’t pay for his drink with you. I’ve been keeping an eye on him since. I would have been here sooner but I was needed out in the car park and when I came back Frost wasn’t behind the bar to ask him where you’d gone. I’m sorry.”

“You have nothing to apologise for. I just want to get out of here. Can we?”

“Yeah, let me grab your dress.”

He turns and steps over Aiden’s prone body, accidentally on purpose I think, kicking him in the face as he grabs my dress and then passes it back to me.

Pulling it on and smoothing it into place, I look at the bed and shiver, before moving to the seat I occupied before and sinking down into it to undo the straps on my shoes.

“Am I going to get my face fucked or my ass reamed by management for taking my shoes off, or is it okay now that I’m off the clock?”

Don frowns, his brow furrowing as he listens to me. “North would never overstep a boundary like that.”

I argue back, my voice tinged with frustration. “Umm, he did.” My lips curl into a slight scowl, mirroring my irritation. “He even invited you to watch!”
