“Are you good?”

Swallowing, I nod.

“Okay. I’m going to let go now. Try not to fall all over me,” he says with a smirk that’s more teasing than thorny.

Why the sudden change?

He releases my elbow and I take a deep breath, pulling myself together.

“Sorry about that,” I say to the customer who’s patiently waiting, his eyes alight with mirth.

“That’s quite alright, darling’. It was fun to watch.”

My face is on fire again as I finish serving him.

“Vixen’s about to begin. Get out there and watch Bambi.”

Sure enough, all eyes turn to Vixen and the main lights lower until the stage is just uplit from underneath, casting Vixen in a demonic glow. She looks absolutely terrifying like that, but the crowd can’t get enough of her.

Frost gives me a gentle shove out from behind the bar, the heat of his palm on the small of my back searing my bare skin, making me gasp.

My eyes are glued to the stage as Vixen cracks her whip again, setting the rhythm of the music. The sound echoes through the room, making me shiver. Sweat glistens on her skin under the flickering lights, and it’s like she’s in a world of her own, lost in the moment.

Suddenly, she drops the whip and saunters over to me, the heels of her boots clicking against the glass stage. The crowd parts and hushes, and it feels like the air has been sucked out of the room.

“You’re doing great,” she whispers, leaning in close to me. Her lips brush against my ear, sending a jolt of electricity through me. Her scent is intoxicating, a mix of sweat and leather and something distinctly Vixen and unbelievably sexy. Her breath is hot on my neck, and it takes all my willpower not to shiver with desire.

She pulls away, a wicked grin on her lips and suddenly I feel uncomfortably warm, with way more eyes on me than I’d ever want, as she turns and saunters away, back to the stage. Many turn to watch her go, but more than a few stay locked on me. I want to run and hide, but I’m rooted to the spot, on fire and tingling from my scalp to my toes.

I wait a respectable amount of time for the crowd to lose interest in me. It doesn’t take long because Vixen’s now whipping her victim, who’s bent over some sort of padded wooden apparatus – honestly, it looks like something we used touse in primary school PE but kinkier – and once I’m forgotten I slink back to the bar, my heart pounding so hard it feels like it’ll jump out of my chest.

Frost, perched on a stool, is grinning at me, his eyes glittering with a wicked amusement that sends my cheeks blazing even more. As I approach, his grin widens into a shit-eating smirk that’s impossible to ignore.

I lean in close, my voice a furious whisper. “Why did you do that?” I hiss, my irritation barely contained.

“Do what?” Frost feigns innocence, but the glint in his eyes tells a different story.

“Force me to go out there. I’m so embarrassed,” I mutter, my eyes darting around the room, feeling exposed and vulnerable.

Frost chuckles softly, a low, throaty sound that sends shivers down my spine. “Don’t be. Vixen’s the most sought-after girl in this club, and she just shared her spotlight with you. Now members are looking at you and wondering what all the fuss is about. She made you desirable. Almost.”

“I didn’t ask to be in any spotlight!” I retort, my frustration bubbling up. “I’m a waitress, nothing more. And I’d like to be as invisible as possible.”

Frost leans in even closer, his warm breath brushing against my ear as he murmurs, “Hate to break it to you, Bambi, but you could never be invisible.”

His lips graze my earlobe, and an electric jolt shoots through me. My heart races, and my body betrays my best efforts to remain composed. I glance away, a mixture of anger and desire, and struggling to fight the attraction that simmers just beneath the surface.

He’s such a dick to me. Why does that turn me on? I’m a glutton for punishment, doomed to constantly repeat the same mistakes.

“You could never be invisible, Candy,” he whispers seductively in my ear again as he slides his palm across my lower back once more, causing my breath to hitch. “Because you don’t fit in here. Don’t belong. Never will. And the sooner you realise that and fuck off back to where you came from, the better it’ll be for everyone.”

I bite my lip, and a horrible, hollow feeling forms in the pit of my stomach. I hate that he’s right. But I also hate that he’s managed to pinpoint so many of my insecurities so accurately. I’m not sure how to respond, so I do the first thing that springs to mind. I lift my hand and slap his cheek as hard as I can.

Frost is silent for a few moments. I hold my breath, waiting for him to respond, but he’s just looking at me, eyes wide with surprise.

“I’m sorry,” I whisper, mortified, my hand over my mouth. “I didn’t mean to…”

He grins, devilishly. “Oh, I know you didn’t mean to.”
