I don’t hesitate, typing in the code to unlock it.

“You remembered my passcode?” He smiles at me.

“It’s my birthday, isn’t it?” He nods. “I don’t know how I knew that, but yes, somehow I remembered.”

I bring up his music app, scroll through his many playlists and choose one, then hit shuffle so that the tunes play at random. ‘DiE4u’ by Bring Me The Horizon begins to play and I grin. I love this song. It doesn’t take long to get to campus, the roads are quiet until we get near to Avalon itself. Cove parks the cart and I cut off the music mid-beat.

“Have a good class, Mai-Tai,” Cove says, giving me a massive hug that I can’t bring myself to pull away from.

“Malia, this is for you.” Reef passes me a small, warm package wrapped in tin foil. I peel back the corner to reveal a bacon sandwich and smile gratefully at him.

“Thanks.” My stomach rumbles at the delicious scent, and he chuckles.

“Thought you might need that. Stay safe guys,” Reef tells us, walking away.

“Yes, prof,” Bhodi snickers under his breath. I jab him in the ribs.

“Don’t be mean. Come on, I don’t want to be late.” Because, weirdly, even though I know my presence in today’s lecture is going to piss him off, I think turning up late on top of that might just send the professor over the edge.

As we’re walking across campus, I get the feeling that someone’s watching me. Like maybe we’re being followed, but whenever I check behind me, no one’s there. I shake it off to paranoia, the final lasting effects of coming off my medication perhaps.

Then the voices start.

I wonder if he likes me. Shouldn’t have had that leftover curry for breakfast. Did we use protection last night? I can’t be bothered to cook tonight. I wish I’d worn my other shoes. I hope the line’s not long at the coffee shop. Do you think it will rain later? Maybe I should dump her. I need to do a pregnancy test. God, I want to strangle her until the light leaves her eyes.

I stumble to a halt and Bhodi flashes me a concerned look.

“You okay, little dot?”

“Umm, y-yeah.” I give him a weak smile. Before I can say anything else though, something catches my attention across the quad. A student, dressed in a cheerleader’s uniform, is racing to get to class, and protruding from the bottom of her skirt, is a long reddish-brown fox tail.

I blink and she’s gone.

“You ready to keep moving?”

“Sure.” I take a shaky step forward and all is fine until we reach the double doors into the main block where the lectures are held. There’s a crush of people, and several bump into me as Bhodi tries to clear a path for us to get through.

I wonder what the police are doing on campus. I hope nothing bad has happened. I heard a rumour that girls were going missing. It doesn’t feel safe here anymore. At first it was just humans, but now Supes are being targeted too. Should I tell someone that it’s been five days since I heard from Lottie? Who’s going to be next? Is it just shifters or are the fae at risk too? You don’t see vamps being hunted though, do you? There’s safety in numbers, packs and clans should be fine, just don’t go anywhere alone. I can smell their fear, I feast on it.

“Bhodi…” I try to call over the din as everything spins. “I don’t feel so good.”

My vision goes fuzzy and dark around the edges and I sway violently on my feet.

“Fucking move!” An angry voice shouts. “Give her some space!”

Fresh air hits my face, and I feel like I can breathe. I blink double-time to clear the spots dancing before my eyes, and I find myself looking at the delicate face of a pretty stranger.

“Are you okay, sweetie?” she asks kindly. I nod, distracted by the beautiful iridescent pink wings dancing in the breeze behind her head. “You gave your boyfriend quite a scare in there. Not good with crowds, huh?”

“Yeah…”

“Malia are you okay?”

I nod again, answering Bhodi’s question this time.

“Sorry. I just got overwhelmed. There were so many people.”So many thoughts.“And they were touching me and I just….”

“Hey, it’s okay. I totally get it, sweetie. You don’t have to apologise,” the girl with the beautiful pixie face tells me.
