It’s not often I get to see a playful side of her, but I like it when I do.

“Yeah. For our study session later.”

“Looks heavy,” she quips.

“You wouldn’t believe how many post-it notes this thing can hold.” That earns me a tired laugh, but I’m taking it as a win.

Even exhausted and wrung out, her laugh is melodious. I try to think if I’ve ever heard her sing…I bet she has a lovely voice.

She slips her arm through mine, which is becoming second nature whenever we’re together. She doesn’t strike me as an overly affectionate, touchy feely sort of person, so it still surprises me every time she does. But in a good way. I love it.

“Are you going to tell me where we’re going?” she asks again.

“Nope.” I grin down at her. She’s really small. And pretty cute when she gets that stubborn frown.

“Can I guess?”

“You can try, little dot.”

“Will you tell me if I guess correctly?”

“You won’t.”

“I might,” she insists.

“If you do guess right, I’ll not only tell you, I’ll give you a prize.”

“Oooh, what?” She gazes up at me, her face alighting with excitement.

“What do you want?” I shrug. I hadn’t thought that far ahead. I was just flirting with her. This is new to me – flirtingwithoutsexual innuendo.

“What do you want to give me?”

Fuck me sideways grasshopper, does she know how much she’s baiting me? On anyone else I would swear it’s deliberate, but it just doesn’t seem Malia’s style.

“Anything. Everything. Whatever you’ll let me give you.” It’s a struggle to not make that sound dirty, and although I’m not sure I entirely manage it, Malia’s face gives nothing away.

“Well, I need to win first. We can worry about prizes later.”

“Fine. Go on then, start guessing. I’ll give you…three chances.”

“What? No! That’s not fair! You didn’t say there was a limit before.”

“Fine. You can have as many guesses as you like between now and arriving.”

“Yay. Okay, let’s see…” she trails off, looking around where we are on campus.

“Umm, are we staying on campus?”

“This isn’t twenty questions, little dot. Are you guessing or not?”

“Oh my, you’re grumpy this morning.”

“Well, like you, I had a rough night.”

“I’m sorry. Do you want to talk about it?”

“No. First guess. Come on. You’re gonna run out of time at this rate.”
