But when he gives me banter right back, it does something to me.

He takes his crutch under his arm and makes his way toward the door of his building. I just stay behind him attempting to keep my fit of laughter under control.

We get inside his building, and he stops at the doors of the elevator but as the smart ass he claims me to be, I keep walking over to the stairs.

“You’re pushing it, Firefly.” His voice echoes behind me and I turn to look at him, pretending to be confused as to why he’s standing at the elevators. He just furrows his brows and stares at me through his oak-colored eyes, which I can’t deny.

“Oh, I forgot. You’re broken,” I deadpan as I skip innocently back toward the elevators, and almost in perfect timing the doors open up and we make our way in.

We settle into the elevator; he’s still giving methe lookand I can’t help but look forward and pretend like I don’t see the annoyance he’s projecting.

But when the doors close, almost in slow motion, and I feel his stare hardening on me, I slip up and glance at him to notice that for a split second that he’s not annoyed,he’s hungry.

Right as the doors come together, shutting us in the small space alone, he makes his move.

He drops his crutch to the floor and pins me against the wall of the steel box. He presses his hands against the wall on either side of my head, closing me in.

“You’re a fucking brat, you know that?” He leans in and breathes into my ear lightly, but it’s so intense from the tension that’s been looming since the hospital, I feel my stomach flutter with need.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I try to keep up my ruse. But I know what I’m doing to him, and it’s turning him on.

“You know exactly what I’m talking about, Dakota. You keep giving me that fucking attitude of yours, and I’m already so fucking pissed off at the situation I’m in. Do you really want to test me?” He removes one of his hands and slides it up my thigh and under my skirt. I gasp at the sudden contact, feeling like I’m already about to explode. Everything tingles inside of me. I feel it so deep. His fingers graze the hem of my panties, and I quiver at his touch.

“Nolan,” I whisper in a fit of lust.

“I can feel you’re already so wet, baby girl. I just want to feel, just a little bit,” he says it almost like he’s asking for approval. So, I nod the most pathetic nod I can muster. He slips his fingers under my underwear and right as one of his fingers swipe over my pleasure, the elevator doors slide open.

I quickly jump out of his hold and push my skirt back down. Nolan lets out the most devilish laugh I’ve ever heard from the man as he leans down and picks up his crutch.

Thank God no one was standing there waiting to get on.

What an ass.

He did that on purpose.

We walk awkwardly to the end of the hall to his apartment door. He digs his keys out of his pocket and fiddles with them before he gets the door unlocked.

He stumbles in, then turns to look at me as I stay still just outside of reach.

“You coming in?” he asks.

He had changed back into the clothes he was wearing before his accident, his dirty ripped up jeans and his white shirt, both stained with mud. His hair is mussed, and his eyes look tired, and he’s got a hint of anger displayed in them.

Despite all of that, I’m so turned on by the man standing in front of me.

I can’t get enough of him, and I wonder how many other women stare at him when he’s at school drop-off, or just out doing nothing but existing. He really is so fucking hot, and I cannot for the life of me figure out why Idon’twant to go into his house right now.

Because he makes me nervous.

And I’m dangerously close to falling for him.

So instead of answering him with my words, I just shake my head because I’m impossible and I hope that he accepts it for a real answer and lets me leave.

But of course, he does not.

“It wasn’t an actual question, Dakota. I need you to come inside, please.” He looks almost pained, like me telling him no is going to hurt him. But I know it’s because he’s just as desperate for me as I am for him.

“It’s not a good idea, Nolan,” I say.
