“Because Dakota. You seem like the kind of woman who may need a man to keep up with that attitude of yours.”

I’veneverbeennervousgetting ready for a date before. Then again I haven’t been on a date since before my marriage. So I guess the nerves are warranted. And Jesus, if she didn’t make it harder at the park yesterday. In her tight shorts and her bashfulness all while trying to be cocky at the same time. Fucking turn on.

I was so close to kissing her again. But I need to take this slow.

I put on a pair of dark wash jeans, a black v neck t-shirt—because honestly I don’t own many other kinds of shirts—and a dark gray jacket.

The drive to her apartment isn’t more than fifteen minutes. It’s a brick building, only about five stories high. I recognize the area from the park yesterday.

I find a parking spot near the front and jump out of my truck. I walk to the front and buzz the number she gave me.

“Hello?” I hear her voice speak into the intercom.

“It’s Nolan. I’m a little early,” I reply.

“I'm impressed. Come on up.”

The door buzzes open, and I make my way into the building. Once I reach the top of the stairs, I find my way down the hall toward her door.

Before I can even knock, she opens up the door.

Fuck.My jaw drops to the floor. Is she fucking joking? Now, I know she’s beautiful, but this outfit has my dick straining against my zipper. Aching hard.

A Johnny Cash t-shirt tucked into the front of a tight, black leather skirt—short, but not too short—and an oversized jean jacket layered on top. She’s wearing heeled, knee-high boots with a silver buckle on the sides, her fiery-orange hair is tied up into a high ponytail and her freckles are glowing brightly as her dark lashes fan at her cheeks.

“You look amazing,” I compliment her and I can tell it makes her blush, like she doesn’t get complimented enough. But damn, does she deserve it.

“Thanks, Nolan. Don’t look too bad yourself.” My name leaves her lips in a wisp of air, and I crave the way her voice sounds, raspy and soft all at the same time.

“So, are we gonna just stand here or are you going to take me to this movie I was promised?” she snaps at me, and the sarcasm her tone carries almost makes me want to close the door behind us, sayfuck it, and take her to the bedroom.

But I’m not a disrespectful man. Those thoughts are violently lust-filled, and I’ll be damned to let that side take over. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to skip the date entirely.

I need to take my time with this girl. I know nothing about her other than the relationship she shares with my daughter’s best friend. And the way she sounds when she’s about to come. And how I feel when I’m around her. Like it’s easy again. Like there’s nothing to worry about.

“Nolan?” She’s leaning against the door frame, probably watching me eye her up and down like a man starved. And trust me, I’m hungry. It’s been so long since I’ve gotten laid.

“Sorry,” I say, reaching my arm out for her. “Shall we?”

She wraps her fingers around my bicep after closing and locking the door behind her. The feeling of her fingers touching my skin doesn’t do anything to get rid of this want I have for her.

And it makes it so much harder to resist when I feel her nails dig into my flesh.

“Everything okay?” I ask as we walk down the stairs to the main floor. I look over at her as she realizes what she’s doing, which makes her let go of the contact entirely.

“Shit, I’m sorry. I guess you can say I’m nervous,” she admits, “It’s been a while since I’ve been on a date.” That makes me feel better, because me too.

I lead her out of the building and into the parking lot. We reach my truck and I walk her around to the passenger side, opening the door to help her up—knowing it’s a bit of a reach. I attempt to place my hand on her back for support as she hoists herself up, but she stops midway and lowers herself back to the ground.

“What are you doing?” I ask as she shuts the door to my truck.

“The movie theater is only about a twenty minute walk. We’ll only miss a few opening previews. What do you say?” She nudges me in my arm as she looks up at me with her green eyes. There’s no way I’m able to deny them. “It’ll give us a chance to get to know each other better.”

“Yeah. Let’s do it.” And with that, we both head down the main street.
