Hope you slept well, can’t wait to see you.

The message sends butterflies ablaze in my tummy. Finally, a welcome feeling. Something to grasp onto and look forward to.

I send him a quick text back letting him know what time my plane should land. I told him that I’d be taking an Uber to my mom’s house first thing because I miss my little Em, but after that, I’m all his.

He sends me a winky-face emoji and I put my phone away in time for me to catch Sterling lowering her eyes to stare at me with something that looks like mischief.

I give her a confusing look. “Yes?”

“How far along are you?” she asks, and I choke on my next intake of air. Stuck in a state of being dumbfounded, I think over her question trying to come up with any other scenario that would require a length of time to be answered to, but alas, the only plausible assumption I can think of is pregnancy.

Callan approaches with our coffees and the way his face morphs into a painful twist of awkwardness confirms that he overheard his fiancés question.

“Umm, hi. Not pregnant.” I wave my hands over the table in a gesture of showcasing, glowering at Sterling. “Not pregnant.” I look up, sternly, at Callan to make sure he heard my statement but feeling the heat of embarrassment caress my skin. “But thanks for the concern.” I smile at Sterling before desperately reaching for the iced latte Callan got me.

“Would that be so bad?” Callan asks, pulling a chair out and sitting next to us, obviously not knowing what to say in this conversation and I give him a hard side-eye to playfully indicate that he’s better off muted right now.

“Well, for one, I haven’t been with Nolan for more than a month, so it could possibly be very bad if I were pregnant.” I intertwine my fingers and hold my hands on the table in front of my chest.

“Okay, but the nausea and dizziness are pretty explainable for a scenario like getting knocked up.” Sterling points out and I press my lips inward to form fish lips.

“Classy. Dizziness can be explained by anything. Like right now, this conversation is the driving force behind my near-dizzying headache,” I reply back.

“You were throwing up this morning in your room,” she snaps back sweetly, trying to express concerns of my recent actions and I roll my eyes mentally.

“That’s probably from stress.” I try to argue.

“When’s the last time you’ve had your period?” She pulls her hot coffee to her lips and blows.

I glance subtly at Callan who looks pretty uncomfortable considering we are now talking about my menstrual cycle, but he plays it off by pretending to not be listening any longer while keeping himself occupied on his phone.

“Sterling,” I say in a mom-tone.

“I’m just saying.” She holds her hands out in front of her as if in surrender.

But then I entertain the idea and try to remember the last time I had my period, and considering it’s near the end of March, it would have been about a month ago; I was supposed to get it last week.

“No. It’s not possible.” I lean in a little further to the table and cover my mouth with my hand in hopes that Callan won’t hear. “We only had sex like literally seven days ago.”

Her lips curl into a smile, also covering her mouth to provide me the same courtesy of keeping our conversation low. “You should do a test; some can give you results up to seven days after intercourse.” She winks at me.

“Eh, hmm.” Callan coughs into his fist as he gets up from his chair. He obviously heard us. “I’ll be in the car waiting for you.”

“Don’t miss me too much.” Sterling grins at him and he gives her a devious smirk back.

“I always miss you, my little rose.” Then he turns and leaves the coffee shop.

“God, you two are so fucking cute,” I tell Sterling, being completely honest but also hoping to change the ridiculous topic.

“Nuh, uh. Not that easy, Dakota. I really think you should buy a test. Just to be sure.”

“Sterling, I’m not pregnant.”

“Did you use protection? I mean, even if you did, those things don’t always work. It could have ripped or maybe he—”

“It’s not possible.” I cut her off, raising my voice just a little bit louder in an attempt to get the message across to her.

“It’s very possible, babe. I’m just looking out for you. I mean, you’re too young and I really think that you should—”
