“Callan just asked that I check in with you.” He fiddles with some pens in a jar on my desk.

“Why couldn’t he just check in on me himself?”

“He’s been in back-to-back meetings today. Texted me that you weren’t feeling well and wanted to make sure you were okay.” He smiles. “What have you done to my alpha-hole of a friend, Sterling? Have you whipped and tamed him?” His smirk deepens as he leans against my desk, his slight southern accent coming out a bit.

“I cannot confirm or deny if I’ve had any part in this,” I laugh, holding my palms out in front of me. “But hey, enough about me. I heard you’re leaving the dealership?” I ask, remembering that Callan mentioned a conversation between him and Jax a few weeks ago.

“Yeah, nothing is official yet. I just kind of want to figure out my life. I’ve been away from my family for a while. My brother is supposed to be coming home from deployment soon. Which I could honestly care less about. I like this job, but I feel like there’s something else out there for me,” he admits and his boyish smirk dissipates slowly as he ponders. And I know exactly how he feels…or I did at some point.

“Where’s home?”

“Dallas.”

“Oh, so heisa southern boy,” I quip and his smirk deepens. “Well, I think you need to follow your heart.” It’s all I can say. Though I think he senses that I’m probably not someone who’s in the best shape to be giving out advice as I’m half-awake with my head resting on one hand. He gives me a grateful and sympathetic smile.

“Thanks, Sterling. Well, I’ll leave you to it, and I hope you feel better.” As he turns to leave, I hear the click of a door being opened down the hall. He looks out. “Looks like Callan’s meeting just left if you’d like to go see your boy.” He smiles again before disappearing into the hall.

“Thanks, Jax. See ya.” I throw my head down on my desk and groan into my forearms before getting up and smoothing my hair down. I know Callan will either tell me to go home or give me the remedy, so I decide to head toward his office.

I knock on his door gently and his sexy voice answers in return.

“Come in.”

“Hey,” I mumble as I close the door behind me.

“Hey sweetheart. Are you feeling any better?” Callan gets up from his desk immediately and walks toward me.

Today he’s wearing a dark maroon pants-suit with a black silk tie on top of a white button down. My breath hitches at the realization that this is the man who fucks me when he comes home from work.

“Actually, I think I’m going to head back home. I really don’t feel well.” My head aches as I talk to him, the lights seem too bright, and my stomach is twisting like I just got off a rollercoaster.

He turns towards his desk and digs in one of the drawers before coming back to me. He reaches out his hand and gestures to me to open mine.

“What’s this?” I hold my palm open as he drops a single key in it.

“Your new car,” he announces.

“What?”

“Sterling, you couldn’t possibly think that I’d own a dealership, let you live with me, call you my girlfriend, and not get you your own car, did you?” He smirks his all-consuming grin at me as I blink in bewilderment. “Especially when you’ve been such a good girl.” His grin turns nefarious as he winks his stupidly gorgeous eye at me.

My own car?

I’m speechless.

“But seeing as you’re pretty out of it, I’m going to have Gerald take you home today. We can test run this bad boy another day.” He saunters back over to his desk to call Gerald.

“Callan, I don’t know what to say. Thank you.” He smiles at me as he waits for his call to be answered.

My own car.

I don’t know how to process this.

God, could this man be any more perfect?

He finishes his conversation then walks back to me, still seated with my head in my hands.

“Do you need to go to urgent care?” I wince at the mention. Even though I’m in a better place now, I am still paying off the hospital bill that Callan has no idea about and I still don’t have health insurance. The dealership offers coverage, but I missed the new hire deadline and now I have to wait for open enrollment.Ugh, my head hurts so fucking bad.
