“What the fuck?” Ghost laughs.

“Don’t hate,” Caden says, not stopping. I pretend like I’m slapping his ass, and Ghost shakes his head.

“You two are trouble together.”

“You’re just mad I’m not rubbing my ass on you,” Caden jokes, and I actually see a reaction from Ghost. His eyes widen slightly, and he scrubs a hand down his face.Interesting.

“Can we talk?” Ghost asks, looking at Caden.

“Not right now,” Caden replies, stopping his dancing.

“When?” Ghost asks, crossing his arms over his chest.

“I’ve said all I needed to say. You wanted the merger. You got the merger. Now, if you’ll excuse the fuck out of me.” On that, Caden grabs my arm again and leads me to the front door. I look back over my shoulder at Ghost and mouth ‘sorry’. Ghost is just staring after us, looking lost.

“Caden,” I say, pulling him to a stop when we hit the front porch. “Talk to him.”

He takes my cup and sits it on the porch banister. “I don’t want to tonight. This morning was enough talking for me. You want to go back to your place and hang out? Or stay here?”

I can sense he doesn’t want to be here anymore, and I only came for him anyway. “Let’s go to my place. But you need to tell me what’s really going on.”

Caden wrinkles his nose and groans. “But I don’t wanna.”

“Oh my God,” I laugh. “Quit being a crybaby, and come on.”

“Firefly,” he whines, reluctantly following me off the porch. “Why do you make me do that?”

“Talk?” I ask, glancing over my shoulder at him. “Because you don’t need to keep that shit in. Plus,” I whirl around when I get to my car, “I’m dying to know what the fuck is going on.”

“Oh, so you don’t actually care. You just want to be nosey. Good to know.”

“You know that's not all it is.” I look around. “Where did you park?”

Caden grins. “Over there.” He points to the side of the house. “He hates when I park in the yard.”

“You’re such a shit-stirrer,” I say with a roll of my eyes. “Get in. I’ll bring you back to your car later.”

“Oh! Let’s have a sleepover. We can braid each other's hair and talk about boys.”

“Get in the damn car.” I walk around to the driver’s side and slide behind the wheel, Caden getting in on the other side.

One way or another, I’m getting answers tonight.

Chapter 2

Ghost

IwatchasCadengets into Bridget’s red Honda Civic, pissed that he still won’t talk to me.

I understand. I knew everything about him, and I couldn’t even tell him the most important thing about myself. And it’s not that I don’t trust him. I didn’t tell him because I wanted to keep him safe. My father is a ruthless motherfucker, and he’ll go after anyone just to hurt me. I couldn’t risk that with Caden. He’s more than capable of taking care of himself, that’s not the problem. The problem is, I’m damn protective over him.

“What’s up, man?” Banger asks, stepping beside me on the porch. “Where’d he go?”

“With Bridget,” I answer. I have to admit that I’m a little jealous of their friendship. That used to be him and me; hell, he practically moved into my house. We spent so much time together. And I fucked it up because I couldn’t bring myself to tell him the truth.

“You sure he’s okay with the merger?” Banger asks, leaning his arms on the porch banister, watching all the people milling around the yard. I only had this damn party for Caden, and he left twenty minutes after getting here.

“Nah, not really. He won’t talk to me to find out.”
