“Listen to me,Moya zhizn. Help will be there in two minutes. Nothing’s going to happen to you.”
My bedroom door busts open and smacks against the bedroom wall. Oh my god. I scramble into the bathtub, silently close the curtain, and crouch in the corner. “Alexey,” I whimper. “They’re in my room.”
“Shhh. It’s okay. One minute.”
They’re prowling right outside the bathroom door, I can hear the heavy clomping of their boots. Fuck, this is really how I’m going to die. The doorknob jiggles. No, no, no. I bury my head in my arms, clutching the phone to my ear, Alexey murmuring soothing words, but even through my panic, I can hear the strain in his voice.
The bathroom door busts open. “Boginya?” Dmitri? The twins are hardly ever apart. I rip open the shower curtain, and he strides to the tub, stepping into it. I fall into his arms without hesitation.
“You came,” I cry. After all the bullshit, Alexey and Dmitri were still here. And I’m the stubborn ass bitch that won’t put my feelings about my ex aside.
“Of course I did,Boginya,” he answers, rubbing my back. “Is Lex still on the phone?”
Oh, shit. I jerk my phone back to my ear. “Are you still there?”
“I am. Let me talk to D.”
I hand my phone over and barely hear what he’s saying. He just keeps rubbing my back, but that’s when I notice his hands are trembling. I pull back to look into his eyes, and they’re focused on my face. He says goodbye to Alexey, scoops me up in his arms, and strides back to my bedroom, stepping over a body on the way.
“What did you do?” I ask out of curiosity.
“I killed him,” Dmitri says, matter of fact. Oh, cool. There’s a dead guy in my apartment, and all I can do is inhale Dmitri’s expensive cologne. He lays me gently on the bed, and when he goes to step away, I grab his hand.
“You’re shaking,” I state like he doesn’t already know that.
He gives me a tight smile. “I’m fine.”
He walks over to the body and heaves it over his shoulder before striding from the room. I watch him through my open bedroom door, move around the townhouse then disappear around the corner.
Was this some kind of random attack? Or was I targeted for something? So many thoughts are rolling through my head.
Dmitri steps back into the room minutes later. “I have someone coming for him. Are you okay?” I nod automatically. “Keep your phone close.” He turns on his heel to leave, and panic claws at my throat.
“Don’t go,” I blurt out, causing him to turn slowly back around. “I don’t want to stay here alone.”
He eyes me for longer than necessary before coming back to the bed, kicking his shoes off, and motions for me to scoot over. He lays down beside me, and I notice the tremors are still in his hands. “Get some sleep,Boginya,” he says when he notices me looking. I hand my phone to him to lay on the bedside table, shut my eyes, and try like hell to fall back asleep. But it’s useless. After my third sigh, Dmitri chuckles.
“What’s wrong?” he asks.
“I can’t sleep. Who was that guy?”
“I don’t know. But we’ll find out.”
I open my eyes, and his face is right in front of mine, his dark eyes almost glowing in the room. He’s even more beautiful than I remember up close. Dark brows over even darker eyes, high cheekbones, a strong perfect jawline with stubble that’s thicker than I normally like but looks irresistible on him. Perfect lips to bite on.Stop it. This is some type of trauma response to almost becoming fish food.
He reaches up and tenderly pushes some hair off my face. “Why are you shaking?” I ask.
He jerks his hand back and clenches it into a fist. “Nothing to worry yourself about,Boginya. Go to sleep.”
I huff and close my eyes, snuggling into the pillow. I don’t have any right to demand answers.
The only thing that matters is that he showed up when I called.
I wake up the next morning, stretching, then shoot up in bed when I remember last night. My head whips to a deep chuckle, and Dmitri is sitting in the little chair that I have tucked in the corner.
I frown. “Were you watching me sleep?”
“You make the cutest faces when you’re asleep,Boginya.”
