“I’m fine. And now, I know exactly what to do.”Plastering a sweet, insincere smile on her face, Autumn said, “No, thanks. I’ll pass.”
Shocked silence met her reply, then Kingston, Lucifer, and Huxley started to chuckle.
“I knew I liked you,” the King of Hell praised. “Leave now, celestials. The goddess said no.”
“I am an attendant to the emperor himself! And saying no is not an option.”
“Oh, really?” Autumn stressed. “If there was a rule stating that, I think the magical source would have let me know since it gave me all the information I need. Besides, I have lived in the Human Realm my entire life. I don’t believe I can be forced to take an oath of loyalty to someone I’ve never met in another realm.”
“Now that you are a goddess—”
“The Goddess of Revenge, to be exact.” Autumn lifted her chin. “Being as pissed as I am that you are trying to force me, I don’t think your emperor will want me anywhere near him right now. Not if he has any secrets he wants to hide. Like you, for instance.”
She pointed to the second male, and the celestial stiffened with outrage.
“What are you implying?”
“Oh, I’m not implying. I saw it just now. I’m not sure the King of Hell is going to be happy with you knowing that you pushed your demon lover down a flight of stairs after you found out she was pregnant with your child last year. Sure, you claimed it was an accident, but I know better. Didn’t want to get caught with a hybrid, huh? Especially since your emperor is well known for his hatred of them.”
“Did he, now?” Lucifer purred, then he disappeared with the celestial.
Before anyone else could speak, Lucifer was back and looking far too pleased with himself as he leaned against the closest tree.
“What have you done with him?” the other celestial demanded.
“Tucked him away somewhere safe until I get a chance to question him further. Now, the emperor sent you two immortals here knowing you would probably not be making it back tonight. I’m feeling generous. I’ll let you return with a message from me. Stop bothering us. If he keeps pushing, we’re going to start pushing back…and he really won’t enjoy that.”
The celestial gave a curt nod, then vanished.
Autumn leaned against Kingston, letting his strong arm around her waist hold her up. “If we hadn’t gotten that warning from Jilli earlier, I would have accepted those flowers from him. Could that have really been construed as me accepting that G-hole as ruler?”
Lucifer shrugged. “He would have tried to make that argument. Don’t worry. These are early days in this particular battle. He won’t like knowing I was here tonight, which means he probably won’t be bothering you anymore. Now, don’t let this ruin your night. Come on…Huxley, is it? Have a drink with me.”
“Oh, really I…okay.” Huxley shot them a pleading look over his shoulder as Lucifer dragged him away.
Once they were alone, Kingston wrapped his arms around Autumn and leaned down to brush his lips against hers. “I’m proud of you, little goddess.”
“Are you?”
He nodded. “Not only did you stand up for yourself and defy the Emperor of the Gods, you also got revenge for an unknown demon who had been wronged. You truly are the Goddess of Revenge.”
That she was, Autumn thought with immense satisfaction. And anyone who wanted to mess with her, her mate, or her friends better prepare themselves because she was done holding back. She was ready to fully embrace her gifts and prove just how sweet a little revenge could be.
The End
