“I want to play you something new. You want to hear it?”
Work forgotten, I leap up from the desk and race to the bed, crawling over it to get closer to him and sitting back on my legs. “You’ll finally let me hear the song you’ve been working on?” He’s been so secretive about it, and it’s been killing me. I’ve heard the tune, a bit of the melody, but he won’t let me see his notebook, and he hasn’t sung any of the words in my presence.
“Yep. You ready?”
I bounce up and down. “Yes, yes, yes.”
“Oh, you’ll be saying that word just like that again later.”
I burst out laughing and then clap my hands. “I’m sure, now sing for me.”
He ducks his head. “It’s probably too long, and there’s, uh, no chorus, so it’s probably not marketable.”
I smack him on the leg. “I don’t care, quit stalling.”
He watches me, the dimple in his cheek making an appearance, his eyes glossy. “This is for you, Mindy.”
Then he opens his mouth and sings, his eyes trained on mine, never once faltering.
