As I try to roll away, she grabs me around the waist and pulls me close to her, somehow closer than we already were. She wraps a leg around my hips and pushes herself up so we are face to face. In the same motion, she leans in and presses her lips to mine. Then she pulls away, looks straight into my eyes, and breathes, “Don’t you dare.”

I widen my eyes and open my mouth to make a smart-ass remark, but before I can think of one, she brushes her tongue against mine. When I moan, she slips her tongue inside my mouth. Instinctively, I pull her in to me, deepening the kiss and making sure she knows with each flick of my tongue that I crave her today even more than the first time she let me have her. It is getting increasingly difficult to keep from just flipping her onto her back and sliding inside her. She pulls herself higher and grinds against me, letting me know how wet she is now. I wrap my arms around her waist, groaning into our kiss, and she smiles against my mouth. She knows how badly I want her, and she is enjoying every second of it.

But two can play at this game.

I move my lips off of hers and kiss a trail along her jawline until I get to the hollow behind her ear. She gasps sharply as my tongue traces a spiral on that favorite spot of hers and her breasts press into me. My hands grab her ass, I kiss down her throat, but I haven’t gotten very far when her hand wraps around my cock. I groan against her delicate skin.

She then brings her lips to my ear, and I hear her voice, strained from trying not to be too loud. “Jake,” she moans my name, my cock is aching for her. I shudder in her hand. “I need to feel you inside me. I need it!”

Never one to deny my lady her needs, I push her shoulder until she is on her back, one knee bent and falling down to the side a bit, showing me just enough of her hidden treasure that I bite my bottom lip and hold my breath as I move into place above her.

I slide between her legs and press myself to her warm opening, but before I have the chance to advance, she wraps her legs around my waist and buries me inside her to the hilt. We move together smoothly, rhythmically. We are back on the same team, ready to move forward through this crazy world together.

Our bodies rock against each other easily, and we both form a sheen of sweat. When I try to lift myself up to try a different angle, Miranda’s finger tips burrow into the hair on the back of my head and pull me down so she can keep kissing me deeply. Stretching her throat upward, she pushes her chin into mine as she gasps and squeals, trying desperately not to scream out and wake the houseful. She tightens around me in waves, and that’s all I need.

With a few more thrusts, I feel a clenching in my belly. I push into her as far as I can, trying to make us into one. I release deep inside, and then we roll onto our sides. Spent, we lie together, wrapped in each other’s arms for a few minutes, before she gets up, throws on a shirt, and goes to the bathroom.

When she returns, she is still smiling but also crashing into furniture from her half-closed eyes. She is beaming as she climbs back into bed.

“I really need to sleep, Jake.” Miranda’s audible happiness tells me I did my job right. “Especially if we’re going to drive home tomorrow morning, which I think we should. We’ve all had enough of this place for one trip.”

“Agreed. By the way, Phoebe found out about the whole Guardian thing.” I cringe waiting for her response.

“I’m sorry, what?” She props herself on one elbow so she can properly glare at me.

“It wasn’t my fault! I didn’t expect a docent parade to come through.”

She rolls her eyes, which makes me smile because now I know she’s back to herself.

I need her to know something else. “Oh, and, one more thing, I told George I want to train more. And I asked him to train the kids.”

My wife’s eyebrows shoot up.

I laugh, “I mean it was when I was on my way to certain death, but I stand by what I said at the time. I want them to be as prepared as they can be. For anything.”

“I can definitely get behind that,” she barely whispers the words as she nuzzles into my neck, starting to drift off to sleep.

Just as I hoped, coming here brought our family together again. Well, maybe not just as I hoped. But despite the whole monster-fighting situation, I can’t wait to come back here. Next time, I’ll make sure to take Sammy to that aquarium. Hell, I’ll even get the kids all the sweets and ice cream they want.

“Ooh, you know what? I’m going to run over to that twenty-four-hour sweet shop. The kids didn’t get to indulge in nearly enough junk food while we were here, and I think it will soften the blow of us cutting the weekend short if we have candy to bribe them with for the rest of the weekend.” I push myself out of bed and yank some fresh clothes out of my bag.

“Now? You’re going now? It’s two o’clock. Can’t you just go in the morning? The actual morning, I mean. When the sun is out and all?” She’s collapses onto her back in complete exhaustion.

“I’m not even tired. I got such a rush from getting to help you. Plus, I don’t want to forget tomorrow. You know how stressed we’ll be, trying to get all the bags and kids and everything packed up.” I button up my favorite yellow Hawaiian shirt and search for my wallet.

“Well, at least you won’t need a flashlight with that shirt. But please, be careful.” I know she’s nervous, but she’s also already fading into unconsciousness.

“I will. But I want you to know that I feel perfectly safe because my badass superhero wife and her friends have control over the situation.” I lean in and kiss her, deep, long, with passion.

“Okay, well, I’m going to go to sleep then.” She rolls onto her side, facing away from me, and I smile at the sight of her as I hear a gentle snore starting. This whole Guardian thing took some getting used to, but we’re going to be okay. I know we are. I love this woman more than I ever have anyone else in this world.

I move silently as I push my wallet and keys into my back pockets, descend the stairs, and exit the house. I whistle softly as I walk the boardwalk, which is still relatively active, even at this late hour. I smile at the college kids who make up the majority of the people, besides me, crazy enough to be out here right now. A saxophone player stands next to the rail that overlooks the beach. Even in the dark, he wears sunglasses. I nod to him as I enter the sweet shop, leaning against the door frame for a second to wait for the déjà vu to pass.

Humming along to the soft music, I peruse the aisles, filling a handbasket with boxes of salt-water taffy, wax soda bottles, and tubs of cotton candy. Outside, the shift in the musician’s melody is almost imperceptible. I barely notice when the saxophone stops, and his voice begins. Such a beautiful song…
