“Last month.”

Fuck.

A month?

A whole fucking month without a call?

That meant she hadn’t told them she’d come running into my office a couple weeks ago. I’d tried to chase after her, but by the time I got out the door, she was already gone without a trace, and with the search for Levi and our guests from New York, I couldn’t take the time I’d wanted to go find her.

Finding her now? This girl who had a history of running away?

I had my work fuckin’ cut out for me.

“I’ll find her.” It was a promise, and I had no intention of breaking it. “Let me finish up what I’m doing here, then I’ll go hunt her down.”

“Thank you.” Donovan’s voice wasn’t much more than a whisper, and my chest clenched tight at the sound. “Let us know…”

Wanted to tell him it’d be alright. That I’d bring their daughter home safe and sound. But there was no sense lying. Most I could hope for was to bring her home.

Eventually.

Weight settled hard upon my chest, but I forced out, “I’ll call as soon as I can.”

With another quiet, “Thank you,” the man hung up.

The room behind me was silent, and once again, I found myself not wanting to turn. Didn’t want to face Frankie and Vinny, not when I was feeling like this.

Not wanting to didn’t mean a damn thing. In this line of business, there was no room for that.

Frankie’s curiosity was still plain as day, but her concern was even thicker. “Everything alright?”

My face twitched, wanting to assure and appease, yet weighed down by the gravity of this whole damn mess. “Kelly’s gone missing.”

Again.

Frankie may have been a ball-buster, but the woman had a big heart. Her face crumpled for one quick moment before she sucked in a deep breath and stood. “We’ll finish this discussion some other time.”

“Hey, boss?” My employee, Kolton Johns, stood in the doorway behind me. “Van needs you out front. We got a problem.”

Of course we did. Because this day just couldn’t get any better.

“What is it?”

Kolton didn’t say a word as he led the way down the hall and to the lobby of Bridgewater Security. In light of the camera crews standing around outside, Joss had pulled the shades. She stood halfway between her desk and the front door, hands wringing as she glanced between me and the windows.

“What’s going on?” I asked again, this time to Van, who was peeking through a slat in the blinds.

“FBI’s sitting out there.”

“FBI?” Frankie’s voice was as close to a wail as I’d ever heard. “What is—”

Had Vinny to thank for shutting her up. His hand was tight around his cousin’s bicep, and he was holding her back.

“How do you know it’s FBI?” I asked as I looked out the way Van was pointing, to the black sedan sitting down the block.

“Special Agent Drea Hernandez.” He turned to me, a crooked sneer on his face. “Let’s just say, she’s a family friend.”

“Maybe you should invite her in.”
