But Wade is, in fact, his cheeks almost look like they might be a little pinker than normal.

“The pool isn’t open in October,” the lady snaps, shaking her head and handing Wade the room keys. “Have a nice stay Mr. Anderson.”

“Thanks,” he says with a nod before heading to the elevator right here in the lobby. I lead Bear past the desk, and he gives one loud Woof! at her.

“Oh hush,” I say to him, ignoring the annoyed look on the woman’s face. Wade holds the door of the elevator open for us to join him, and as soon as the door closes, he bursts into laughter.

“That poor woman,” he says, removing his sunglasses and rubbing his eyes. “You did good though. I almost believed you were actually crazy there for a minute.”

“Well, for all you know, I just might be,” I point out, giving him a funny look as the elevator rises to the fifth floor. “You didn’t even ask to see my medical records.”

He stops laughing, his eyes widening as he looks over at me. “Is there something I should know, then? Were you serious about the pool?”

“Yes,” I say, keeping my face dead serious. “Who doesn’t like a good cold swim in October?”

“Uh...” his voice trails off as he takes a step away from me in the elevator.

I shake my head laughing. “Are you really that gullible? I’m kidding.” I glance down at Bear, who’s sitting on my foot, panting a little.

“I know you’re kidding.” Wade snorts, though I can tell by the look on his face, he wasn’t sure about it at first. “Anyway, I’m just glad the dog didn’t have to sleep in the truck.”

Shrugging, I give Bear a good pet. “I would’ve just stayed out there with him.”

“You’re a different breed, Callie.” Wade laughs as the doors open into the hallway.

“My dog is my family, and no family members get left behind,” I reason, holding back Bear as he lunges forward into the hallway. Don’t get me wrong, he’s usually very well-behaved, but he’s never been in a hotel before—and I’m sure there are a lot of new smells for him. Besides, I didn’t put on his work harness, so he knows he can get away with a little more than usual.

“Have you stayed here before?” I ask, just trying to make conversation as my heart beats out of my chest.

I have no idea why I’m so nervous about all of this. He already said that I wouldn’t have to sleep in the same bed as him—or anything close to that. But maybe it’s just him that’s doing this to me.

“I actually have stayed here during the couple trips I took home to visit over the years, but I’ve never stayed in this room. Until now, I’ve never had a reason to have a two-bedroom suite. If I was with my manager, he would just get his own room.”

Right, because if he came with a girlfriend, they probably slept together.

I don’t know why I’m torturing myself with that kind of thinking. I’m clearly not Wade Lewis’s type, and he’s basically sworn off of love anyway. But I just ... I can’t help feeling some sort of attraction to him.

Can you blame me? He is a rockstar, after all.

But maybe it’s also because it’s just been so long since I’ve had any sort of relationship—real or fake.

Speaking of, my phone vibrates as I step into the modest suite, and I glance down at a text from my ex-husband, Nick. He broke my heart three years ago, but seeing his name on my screen still gives me a little PTSD. We dated for nearly six years and then got married and divorced less than two years later.

Nick: Beth told Mom you were going to Texas?

“Why do you even care?” I mutter, rolling my eyes. My sister works with Nick’s mom, so she probably let it slip. Meanwhile, Nick watches me from afar in New York City, living his best life.

The one I wasn’t invited to join.

“Did you say something?” Wade asks, grabbing my attention. “If this isn’t nice enough, we can go somewhere else.”

“I was talking to myself—well, my phone,” I clarify, before glancing around the lavender and gray-themed hotel room. “I think this is really nice. Might even be the nicest place I’ve ever stayed,” I add with a laugh, one that gets me a strange look.

Right. He’s filthy, freaking rich.

His strange look turns to a smile as I let Bear loose from his harness. He runs straight to Wade, who kneels down and scratches behind Bear’s long black ears—his favorite spot.

“You’re not so bad,” Wade coos to him in a way that makes me laugh. “What?” Wade looks up at me.
