I sneak a glance at him. His eyes are focused on the road, and I can’t help but admire how handsome he looks. The light from the setting sun casts a gentle glow over his face, illuminating his strong jawline and chiseled features. His brown hair is messy and tousled in all the right places, giving him an effortless, yet confident, appearance. His broad shoulders fill out his shirt perfectly; it’s impossible to miss those pronounced muscles rippling beneath the fabric with every move he makes. He has an air of mystery about him that adds to his charm—I can’t take my eyes off of him.

There’s a lot more to Wade Lewis than meets the eye.

Chapter Five

Callie

“Are we stopping?” I ask, looking out the window of the truck as Wade pulls into the parking lot of a hotel. “We’re almost to Roberta, right? You said it’s only a few more hours?”

“Yeah, but it’s almost 9 P.M.,” Wade says with a shrug, pulling into a parking spot. “And I’m not ready to be there yet.”

“Right,” I say, my mouth growing dry as I look at how ruggedly handsome he is all over again. It’s a bit surreal since he’s, by far, the best-looking guy I’ve ever seen.

And he’s my fiancé.

Fake fiancé.

“You can have your own room in the suite,” Wade says as he pushes open the door and rolls his shoulders. “There’s no strings attached to this. Same goes for my parents’ house, my mom will insist we sleep in separate rooms until we’re married anyway.”

Relief washes over me—not that I wouldn’t have been able to stand my ground on my own—but still, at least we’re on the same page. Because I don’t even know if I could resist him if he tried.

Ugh.

“Are you okay with this?” Wade asks me, catching the truck door before it closes. His face flashes with something that looks a little like concern. “I don’t know what you read on the internet, but I swear I’m not gonna make you do anything you don’t want to.”

“Everything is good,” I say, giving him a smile and opening the truck door. “I just haven’t been on vacation in a long time.”

“This is hardly a vacation.” Wade smirks, grabbing our bags from the back of the truck.

Of course a billionaire would think that.

I sigh and slide out, taking the time to fasten Bear’s leash and harness on him. We follow behind Wade, and I can already tell that Bear’s got a lot of energy from being cooped up.

“Please be good,” I say to him, scratching his head as I follow Wade into the lobby. There’s no way we look like we go together, but honestly, I don’t even care. I add a little bounce to my step, kind of hoping that someone snaps a picture—or you know, is like, “Oh, who’s that girl with Wade Lewis? She’s so lucky. She’s a hot mess.”

And I’d be like, “Yes—yes I am.”

Except Wade is wearing his sunglasses inside, and based on the front desk clerk’s face, I’m pretty sure she thinks we’re CIA agents or something. That is, until I realize that she’s pointing to me. My heart sinks as my eyes drop to Bear.

“No dogs are allowed here,” she snaps, giving both Bear and I the evil eye. “You should’ve seen that when you made the reservation.”

“Yeah, here’s the thing.” Wade leans against the counter. “I’ll pay double if you let this go for me. That’s my fiancée’s therapy dog.”

“That thing?” she questions, giving me a disgusted look. “That is not going to be okay—”

“If she doesn’t have that dog, she might have an episode,” Wade says, his voice full of painfully legitimate-sounding sympathy. “She just—she just might streak through this whole place naked, leave bad reviews on Yelp, or worse, tell everyone that you turned her therapy dog away.”

The clerk twists her lips as she looks over me. “She does look a little off.”

What? I look off?

“I know,” Wade says with a sigh, “but you know, I just gotta love her through it. She’s actually having a good day today—you should see her on a bad one.”

“Oof,” the woman tsked. “I think I’d rather not.”

“Then she definitely needs the dog,” Wade says with a shrug. “Come on, honey.” He turns to me, a smirk growing across his face. “Let’s get you to the room so you can rest.”

“I really think I might rather go streaking—is there a pool around here?” I answer him, pretending to really think about it as my eyes flicker to the woman. She’s not amused in the slightest.
