The waitress brought their order, and they decided to split so that each had half of a lobster roll and half of a meatloaf sandwich. After they’d finished, they walked back to the Range Rover. Sitting on the windshield, secured by a wiper blade was a piece of paper, folded over. It read:

There are things I didn’t tell you.

There are things you don’t know.

We need to meet.

Selma

CHAPTER 14

THORN

“So do I head to Selma’s house?” asked Jessica.

“I’m not overly fond of being summoned. Does George Martin have a job site between here and there?”

“His next project is a resort up the Old Coast Road. The site where it’s being built is beyond Selma’s house, so we’d need to go there first and then come back to her.”

“That works. Let’s stop at Martin’s development site first.”

“You’re the boss,” she said breezily.

Thorn snorted. Bullshit.

He watched her as she drove. All day, her silky, long, red hair had been escaping from the ponytail she’d pulled it into early this morning. It was like watching the trickle of a waterfall. It flowed down her back, with wispy tendrils falling around her face. Her silken, wavy mane went with her curvy figure—generous breasts with a nipped-in waist that flowed into full hips. She was the single-most beautiful, sensual woman he’d ever seen. But, it was her quick laughter and keen intelligence that drew him to her as no other woman ever had, though, more than her physical attributes.

A delicate smile played around the corners of her mouth. She’d called him the boss, but they both knew it wasn’t true. She might let him think he was in charge and would probably be happy to defer to him, but he knew as well as his own name, it would always be a subtle battle for dominance between them, and he looked forward to many years of sensual combat.

What was it about her? It had all happened so fast; he hadn’t even had time to think. He didn’t question the validity of it, just the timing. It didn’t matter. She was it for him—the one woman he’d been waiting for. The one who could be his partner in all things. No, he didn’t want her to be a cop, but to be with someone who understood him and off whom he could bounce ideas and theories was intoxicating.

George Martin’s proposed resort site was enormous. “I had no idea it was this big.”

“Its sheer size was one of the things that held up approval. It wasn’t until George proposed an access frontage road to relieve some of the congestion as well as brought in a lot of services that might have otherwise overwhelmed Badger’s Drift that it got approved. He also, very wisely, offered a kind of club for locals. If you live in Badger’s Drift, you can become a member of the resort’s club. I forget the name, but for a very reasonable fee, you can use the golf course, swimming pool, bike trails, and some other amenities.”

Thorn laughed. “So basically, he bribed them.”

Jessica nodded with a grin. “Pretty much. Selma, however, was furious and vehemently opposed.”

“Why?”

“The frontage road starts after her house. She was worried about increased traffic. It was weird. She was at the forefront of the opposition and then just abstained.”

“Do you think he got to her?”

“Could be. I know several people hinted at that.” As they pulled into the site, Jessica smiled. “That’s George’s SUV over there.”

“How do you know?” he asked.

“He had it painted a special, personalized color. You can’t miss it.”

She was right. It was a true peacock blue, which stood to reason as his company was Peacock Development.

“By the way, you did a great job with Sophie.”

“I really want to do something for her. Maybe I can work with the university to get her a scholarship if I pay for it anonymously.”

Thorn looked at her quizzically. “Do you have that kind of money?”
