Page 47 of Tempting the Maiden

My cheeks heated. Tuck shifted his weight from foot to foot. We listened as her footsteps receded around the corner and up the stairs. Then everything went quiet, and the only motion was the shadows my candle cast over the walls.

I gulped and looked at Tuck.

Just the two of you now, the flickering light seemed to say. All alone.

His throat bobbed, and his hands formed fists.

“Long day,” he finally murmured.

I nodded. Long and slow enough to give my libido time to imagine better pastimes. Throughout lunch, I’d pictured stealing away to a quiet corner for a quick tryst with Tuck. Given how slowly Lord Winthrop ate, we would have had plenty of time.

And while I’d dutifully concentrated on plans, allies, and enemies throughout the afternoon, I’d stolen a few moments to imagine myself and Tuck lying naked on the rug before that huge fireplace. On the desk, too. Up against the wall…

Don’t worry, my dear, Lord Winthrop had murmured at about that time. Everything will be all right.

I’d nodded quickly. If only he knew where my dirty mind had been.

But that was nothing compared to where my mind flew now that Tuck and I were alone.

“I should go. Good night.” His voice was tight.

I didn’t move or speak. Instead, I willed him to slide closer and kiss me.

The glow in his eyes intensified, and I pictured a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other, both fighting for his soul.

For the first time in my life, I sided with the devil. What did angels know about sweet, sinful surrender? What did they know about passion and need?

But maybe Tuck’s angel was an exception, because his body practically trembled with the effort of restraint, as if both those voices were pushing him toward me.

Finally, he jerked away and walked stiffly toward the other room.

“Tuck,” I whispered.

His steps remained resolute, all the way to the other door, which he opened with a creak. Then he disappeared, and it closed with a thump. I pictured him leaning against the inside, panting.

Then I pictured him inside me, panting in a whole different way.

And, bang! The door flew open so hard, it hit the wall, and Tuck rushed back to me.

My chuckle turned into a moan as his mouth covered mine. Seconds later, he had me pressed hard against the wall.

My free hand — the other still clutched the candlestick — wandered shamelessly, visiting all the places I’d touched in my fantasies that day. His chest. His rear. His groin…

Tuck hissed and lowered his head to my shoulder, breathing hard.

Hard, indeed, my animal side chuckled.

Unicorns were generally prim, old-fashioned souls, more apt to spout romantic poetry than actually getting it on. But my human side knew what I wanted and how to get it, so…

I slid my hand slowly over his shaft.

Tuck gasped, then locked a hand over mine. “We can’t.”

Oh yes, we could. I said so. Wasn’t that enough?

“Come in,” I whispered, pushing my bedroom door open with a foot.

His lips moved a few times before he spoke. “I can’t.”
