Quairken placed an arm around Alzerion. “They wanted to leave before you changed your mind.”

Alzerion smirked as he fixed his gaze on Quairken. “Oh, really. Is that so?”

“Oh, yea.” Quairken pulled away and then turned back to Alzerion. “There’s something else I had to discuss with you. I almost forgot.”

“Is it important or can it wait another time? I’m running a bit behind schedule.” Alzerion rubbed the back of his neck.

“I’ll be brief.” Alzerion looked at Quairken his expression shifted. He was much more serious.

“Of course, let’s sit.”

They sat on the rickety wooden chairs by the training table. “What is it?” Alzerion sked.

“I’m no good at this so I’m going to get right to it.” Alzerion nodded. He was completely fixed on Quairken and nothing else. “Isabella and I are going to have a baby.”

“Wait, you guys are pregnant?”

Quairken opened his mouth but there were no words, so he nodded.

Alzerion bolted up. “Quairken, that’s amazing. Just great news for the both of you!”

“Thanks.” Alzerion ushered them away from the training ground. As they walked Quairken slowed his pace. “Alzerion, I have a favor to ask.”

“Oh?” Alzerion stopped and faced him.

“If something were to happen, would you be my child’s godfather?”

Alzerion blinked, twice. “You want me to—”

“Yes. I can’t think of anyone who would be a better choice.”

Alzerion turned around, full circle as he cleared his throat. He felt a little choked up and didn’t want Quairken to know. He faced Quairken with sincerity in his eyes as he pulled Quairken in for a quick hug. “I would be honored.”

Quairken nodded. He was beaming.

“Why don’t you head off to check on Isabella.”

Quairken started toward the palace and then turned around. “Maybe you can surprise, Aironell, maybe.” He winked and then dashed away.

Alzerion’s jaw gaped open and then he shook his head.

Alzerion strolled through the field a bit. He wasn’t quite ready to head back to the palace. Instead, he wandered soaking in the beautiful day. He heard a noise in the distance and peered out. He saw a figure standing back against a tree in the woods. He ran to the enclosed area and grabbed the person by the shirt collar and turned them to face him.

“Warren, what are you doing here? This is a bit risky, don’t you think?” Alzerion let go of his grip and stepped aside. He made sure to stay hidden by the branches and the large star-shaped leaves.

“I-I had to see you.”

Alzerion shifted, moving so his back was to the opening. He scrutinized Warren, briefly. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” Warren gulped and his gaze darted to the ground.

He knew something was up. Something felt odd about this. They never met this close to the palace.

“Is Ulbrick here somewhere?”

“No.” He shifted his weight and Alzerion noticed that he picked at the hem of his black shirt.

“So, plans are still set?” Alzerion’s brows narrowed as he continued to inspect Warren.
