Aironell felt the lump in her throat worsen. She blinked once, twice, and felt hot tears prick at the corners of her eyes.

“No!” She couldn’t stop the words from streaming from her mouth. “It can’t be. He would’ve told me!”

“We know how you must be feeling.” Queen Evalyn spoke with a soothing tone as she reached for her hand.

“No. I don’t think you do.” Her voice boomed as she stood up and darted away from the table. She stared blankly at a portrait on the wall. Hands clenched around her elbows, like she was pulling herself into a hug. Then she spun around. Anger still welling inside. Tears streaming down her face. “H-h-how?” She swiped at her tear-stained face and then her hands gripped her, once more.

“Aironell, please,” Queen Evalyn pleaded.

“Then tell us, sweetheart,” King Francisco spoke, calmly.

“How could either of you not tell me.” She felt the stinging at her eyes once more. How could he…” The pain gripped her heart like it was being squished and twisted into thin pieces. She clutched at the half-heart necklace and then dropped to her knees. Alzerion. He was the child. She knew it down to her core.

The king and queen ran toward her, both knelt down beside her. She felt her mother’s delicate hand rubbing her back.

“Oh, Aironell,” the king’s voice cracked. “We never meant to hurt you. We… didn’t know how deep your feelings would be.”

“Neither did I,” she mumbled. “He should have told me.”

The queen took her sleeve and dabbed at Aironell’s cheek. “I’m sure it’s not something he is proud to admit.”

“He could have been your child,” she sniffled as she looked at her father.

He pulled her in, tight. “You are my child, my one and only. My heart, darling.” He kissed her forehead.

They sat like this until Aironell felt her breaths start to slow down to her normal pace. She pulled back and smiled at them. They were right. The bigger picture was more important. Alzerion is safe and healthy, and that was because of her parents.

“Thank you–both of you.” She nodded. “If you hadn’t stepped in then I may not have ever met Alzerion.”

Queen Evalyn kissed her fingers and then pressed them to Aironell’s cheek. “You are as close to perfect as it gets.”

Aironell beamed as she let go of her necklace. She knew how she felt and it warmed her. She wanted Alzerion to know thatnothingcould change how she feels about him.

They stood up and the king held out his arm for Aironell to grab. He escorted her back to her chair and they all sat down.

“Do you think you can take any more news? There is something we wanted to tell you?”

They both stared at her, closely.

“As long as you’re not about to tell me I have sibling that I never knew about.” Aironell laughed. “Sorry, I guess it was a bad joke.”

The king chuckled and shook his head. “No. Nothing like that.”

“We don’t want to alarm you,” Queen Evalyn said. “But there is something you should know about from the day of your birth celebration."

“Oh?” Aironell pursed her lips.

“Your father and I were so thrilled when you were born, that we had a feast on your behalf.” Queen Evalyn spoke with fluid motion. She appeared relaxed. “Many people came to see you, our bright light.”

Aironell didn’t know what to say. She felt this warmth dancing inside.

“A special friend of mine even came to lay her eyes on you,” the queen cleared her throat. She wasn’t smiling but instead bit at her bottom lip.

“What your mother means to say, is that her friend had a unique magical gift.”

“That’s right.”

“What kind of gift?” Aironell rubbed her hands together.
