He scooted a bit closer and rubbed her arm. “Come on, Aironell, please?”

Her scowl softened as she tilted her head at him. Before he could move she slid even closer and pulled him in for a hug. Normally, he wouldn’t mind the hug but not after that. It was too fresh on his mind. His body still yearned for her—craved her. He gulped.

Alzerion pulled away and left a soft kiss on her forehead. Those mesmerizing eyes of hers, ugh, they could convince someone to do anything. She was his weakness. He felt like jelly, like he lost control of his, well, control.Did she really not know what she was doing to him?Every touch sent him spinning.

He cupped her chin and smirked. He felt so free with her. What would he feel if Ulbrick had his way? No, he couldn’t think about that, not now. Not when—

Alzerion heard the faintest sound. Quickly, he pulled his hand back, snapped his fingers, and his two shirts were back on. Aironell flinched. He got off the bed, reached over and grabbed her. He picked her up and sat her on the edge of the bed. She blinked. Her mouth opened but then closed.

“Aironell, now is not the time.”

Her head tilted.

“Someone is coming and the last thing we need is someone asking questions.” He sat down next to her to make it seem like they had been chatting.

Aironell nodded. He sensed that she wanted to talk about them—about a future. He was glad someone was coming. It gave him an out. He had no idea what he would say. There was such uncertainty.

Then there was a knock on the door.

Aironell took a breath and said, “Come in.”

As the door opened, Isabella stepped forward holding a small metal tray with an ornate little teapot and a couple cups. Isabella went to speak, but then paused. She looked at Alzerion and then at Aironell. She bowed and then walked to the little tea table. Alzerion saw Isabella’s lips curl into a smile as she did, so. She knew or at least suspected, something. He had to get out of the room.

After she placed the tray on the table, Isabella strolled over. “Good morning, princess.”

Aironell swallowed and turned her gaze to Isabella. She nodded. “Thank you. I appreciate you still checking on me.”

Isabella held her hands against her apron. She looked at Alzerion, again, and back at Aironell. “I didn’t mean to interrupt anything.”

Alzerion smirked. “Nothing to worry about, Isabella. We were done.” He stood up and took a few steps away from the bed. “I, too, came to give a proper morning greeting after our outing the other day.” He bowed his head at Aironell, then nodded at Isabella as he strolled to the door.

Aironell laughed. “Sorry,” she pressed her hand to her mouth.

Isabella kept her eyes on Aironell, thankfully. Alzerion looked at Aironell, almost like he wanted to scold her.

“I didn’t know that was what we were calling it.”

Alzerion’s jaw tensed as he shook his head, then left.

Aironell bounced up, arms embracing Isabella. Then she dashed to her little tea area. She poured the steaming liquid into two cups. Isabella strolled over and sat down, eyes narrowing. Aironell handed her a cup and sat down. Still, Isabella said nothing. Aironell started to feel uneasy. Her fingers rapped against the side of her cup, trying to fill the void of silence.

“Aironell?” Isabella sipped her tea.

Aironell glanced at her, her face giving nothing away.

Isabella’s eyes darted to the bed and then back. “So, how was Alzerion this morning?”

Aironell blushed a bit. “He was good.” She took a gulp of her tea and then wiped her lips. “Isabella, what did you want to discuss with me?” Aironell placed her cup down on the table.

“Aironell, is there a reason you don’t seem to want to speak about Alzerion?”

Aironell shifted in her seat. Lips pressed together, tight.

“Aironell, you know you can always tell me things.”

Isabella knew. Not sure how, but she was sure that Isabella picked up on something between them. She went to say something but no words escaped.

Isabella set her cup down, hands folded neatly. “I want to see you happy.”
