“Not well, to be honest. They feel a bit betrayed by the kingdom and people they have always loved and protected. Someone is using them in every possible manner. They are doing the best they can.”

“How close is Bachusa to revolting?” asked Daniel, who stood up abruptly.

“Honestly, I don’t see it happening any time soon. The group behind this doesn’t have the numbers, and I personally think they are waiting for a more opportune time.”

“Now I see why you always look so overworked,” Isabella sighed.

“Yes, it hasn’t been easy, especially because the king and queen are losing hope. Not to mention they miss their little girl. I try to reassure them by telling them how she’s doing. I even remind them why this is all necessary for Bachusa, but they feel hurt and defeated by the people.”

“Is there anything we can do to help?” asked Daniel. “Isabella and I hate feeling helpless when everything is being threatened and all might be lost.”

“You can’t think like that,” Alzerion voice was firm. “Don’t give up hope. The only thing you need to do is raise Airon. Show her everything to make her a good person, and with that a great queen someday. So far, you two are doing exceptionally well. When she is old enough, you should tell her about who she really is and make sure she is great with her magic.”

“Well, she already uses magic, just as you instructed.” Isabella told Alzerion. “We have been teaching her about the rules, basics, and principles. Our hope is that as she gets older, she will progress nicely.”

“Good. Our success might depend on her magical abilities.”

“We won’t let you down,” Isabella promised.

“Excellent, because Aironell’s proper upbringing is all anyone could hope for.”

“Do you think she will really take the throne?” wondered Isabella.

“Yes, she will, but only after she gets married. However, she will have to fight for her kingdom from the evil within Bachusa that is threatening its very existence.”

“You’re right about that, but I guess I meant do you think the people would want her? I mean, she wouldn’t have grown up in Bachusa, and she would have been away for quite some time,” replied Isabella.

“That won’t matter,” Alzerion reassured her with a wave of his hand. “They will be happy to have the rightful person take the throne. Plus, if she restores the peace then the people will be in her favor.”

“I guess you have a good point,” admitted Daniel.

“Anyway, how much longer do you think you will stay with us? It’s not like we don’t want you here, but we don’t want people to start to get too suspicious back home,” Isabella said.

“Hmmmm … I’m not sure,” Alzerion said with a half-smile. “I’ll probably leave soon.”

Daniel tilted his head. “What will determine when you leave?”

“Honestly, I should have left by now, it’s just … hard. I’ve gotten used to the peace and relaxation. Plus, spending time with Airon makes it even harder to leave. I never knew a seven-year-old could be so sweet and kind.”

“I know she really is a unique and amazing child,” replied Daniel.

“She’ll make a good queen someday. You two really are doing remarkable work. Airon is everything I could hope for plus more. I know I have to go back because if all goes according to plan, I have quite a bit of work ahead of me.”

Alzerion stood. “I should pack. I’ll probably leave tonight.”

Before either Isabella or Daniel could say anything, Alzerion was already in the house. Alzerion was in the spare room, packing for a while. He was finished putting his things together by night fall. He put his belongings in a pile and looked around the room, remembering all the good times he had while staying with Isabella and Daniel. When he was done, he grabbed his stuff and descended the stairs into the living room. Once there, he set his bags on the floor and had the sensation that someone was behind him, so he turned.

Here he found himself face to face with Aironell in powder blue cotton pajama pants with a laced shirt to match. She looked at his bags, sadly, before staring into Alzerion’s eyes.

Alzerion felt uneasy about saying goodbye. He realized it would be harder to leave than he had anticipated, once he saw Aironell’s sparkling cerulean blue eyes start to tear up. Alzerion, frowned as he walked toward Aironell. He felt a bit more relaxed, but it didn’t change what he felt inside. He gazed at Airon with sadness in his cinnamon-red eyes. Then he knelt down and threw his arms around Airon. Alzerion squeezed as he opened his eyes. Isabella and Daniel were watching from the couch. There was a pained expression on her face.

While he hugged Aironell, Alzerion realized how strange things would be for him to leave. He would be returning to a world where she did not exist.

Alzerion started to withdraw his arms, and he saw Aironell’s face. She had water droplets in her eyes and tears were streaming down her cheeks. He gave a faint smile, took his hands, and brushed away her tears.

“Don’t cry, sweet pea. It’ll be alright,” he consoled.

“I’m going to miss you,” she blurted, sobbing.
