“I don’t want to talk about that,” Martha said, her voice sounding sharp.

“Oh, get over yourself.”

“Who was Dave London?” I asked.

“Martha… you want to tell her, or should I?”

“Just this guy who played guitar and drove a station wagon,” Martha began.

“And?” I knew there was something more to it, but Martha was hesitant to spill. “What about him?”

I hoped she would tell me if I pressed her.

“There were three girls and one guy,” Tammy said, gazing over at her like they shared a big secret. “Martha and I were two of the girls. The third girl started out as Dave’s girlfriend, but that didn’t last long. Martha fell hard and fast for him.”

Tammy finished talking, and they both fell silent for a moment.

“And, well… what happened?”

“Dave fucked all three of us,” Martha said, and if I’d been drinking something, it would’ve shot out of my mouth. In all the time I’d known Martha, she never even said damn, let alone fuck!

“At once?” I asked, astonished.

Martha meekly nodded. “But not on a regular basis. It was just for that trip. Everything went to hell afterwards.”

“Does this Dave London have anything to do with why you two argued?” I had to know. Their argument made sense now. I could never figure out what could possibly have been so horrible that they barely spoke for the majority of their lives.

Tammy said, “He had everything to do with why we argued. We were both in love with him, but in the end, he didn’t care about any of us.”

“Do your kids know about this, Martha?”

I had to know. I hoped that maybe that was the reason Natalie and Cody acted the way they did the other night. I wanted to believe that Cody cared about me and regretted his decision, but even then, I wasn’t sure I’d take him back… or any of them. Gabe and Dustin didn’t even get out of the car.

Who did that?

She shook her head and sighed. “I can’t tell them. They think I’m as pure as the driven snow, and your breakup with Cody and the guys, well, when Bernie told Natalie… you can imagine what happened. She confronted Cody, and everything turned into a mess. Especially when Sam got involved and yelled about how I would be hurt by all this crazy behavior. I didn’t have the courage to say anything. I’m sorry.”

“So, she called an Uber and came back here from the airport,” Tammy added.

“And I’m not going back.”

“Ever?”

“Like I said, it’s my turn now. So, what shirt do you want to wear for our next set?”

Tammy pulled out a cream-colored shirt, with big black stars and black fringe. “This would be perfect.”

I changed into the country creation, and we went back onstage. We all knew what Martha should do, but would she? Would she tell her kids what had happened all those years ago?

I didn’t know, and I didn’t want to press her. For now, I simply enjoyed singing with these two incredible women to an audience who loved us, no matter what.

Cody 13

It wasn’t bad enough that my mother wouldn’t answer her phone when I called, but now neither would Aunt Tammy or Emily. I hadn’t officially tried to contact Em since I left a couple of nights ago, but still, how angry could they possibly be? Or did they all fall into a sink hole, or perhaps all three of them were planning something sinister to get even? I knew they were okay because Jimmy affirmed their health. Still, the silence drove me crazy.

At least Jimmy still responded, despite his reservations about getting caught in the middle of all this… whatever this was.

He said they were busy.
