I hesitated telling him all the details, but then again, if anyone would understand, it would be Bernie… or for the sake of respect… Bernard.

“There is… have you ever heard of a polyamorous relationship?”

He stared at me for a few moments, blinked, then smirked. “I have, and holy shit! Are you serious? With Emily? How many other women besides Emily are you talking about? Is this like a Mormon thing? Will you be living on some remote compound in Utah?”

“Not exactly. This polyamorous relationship would go the other way. More men and only one woman.”

His eyes went wide. “And that woman would be Emily? Our Emily? Natalie’s best friend?”

“Childhood best friend, and yes. That’s the one.”

He stared at me for a beat.

Then another.

Then he said, “Does she already have a boyfriend that I don’t know about? Is that what you’re talking about? Wow, this might not sit well with Natalie, despite her euphoric state… and shit, man, what about your parents? Wow, I mean talk about stacking?”

“She doesn’t have a boyfriend… it’s more like Gabe and Dustin and, well… me. The four of us would be in a relationship, maybe. If she wants to, which I don’t know yet, because we haven’t exactly asked her. All I know is, we’re all getting really close to… I mean, we’ve already… not together… but it’s going to happen… maybe… if she wants to, I mean.”

Again, he stared at me as if I’d just told him I’d landed here from another planet. Then he shook his head, and that smirk got wider.

“You can’t be serious.”

“That’s just it, I’m one-hundred percent serious.”

“Wow! What the fuck? And Emily’s okay with this?”

“That’s the part where it gets a little fuzzy.”

“This is some crazy-ass shit.”

“I’ve heard of several groups like this. A few of them live over in Cricket, and there’s even one or two groups in country music. Although, they don’t really publicize it.”

“I would think not. This is way out of mainstream.”

“It certainly is, but it’s a growing practice.”

He moved around on the sofa, trying to find comfort where there wasn’t any. I could tell this was so far out of his realm, I wondered why the hell I’d brought it up to him in the first place. What the hell was I thinking.?

“You want my advice on how to ask her? ‘Cause if that’s what you need, I’m at a loss. Although, I should actually know how to address this issue… I mean it does fall into my purview, even though it’s kinky and hot as hell. Just how do you see this group of lovers working? I mean, is everyone equal in this different kind of affair? And what about marriage. Is there such a thing?”

I sank back into the chair, resting my head on the soft pillow-like cushion. These chairs were always ugly, and women hated them, but damn if they weren’t made for the comfort of the male body.

“In all honesty, I don’t have a fucking clue, but the problem isn’t the physics of our potential crowded bed, it’s the family… my family… and her family. I hadn’t even thought about her family, yet. Just mine. But hers could react even worse. This could be a complete disaster, not to mention if she came along on our tour and joined our backup singers.”

“Can she even sing?”

“From what I heard, she’s amazing. She’d be an asset to our band.”

“And Gabe and Dustin are fine with this crazy arrangement?”

I ran my hand through my hair and sat forward. “Secret… they’ve done this before.”

He chuckled, as if I just kept digging the hole deeper and deeper. “I knew musicians, especially popular musicians came with a shit-load of perks, but fuck, I never thought… You guys are a country band. Morals. Ethics. Conservatives. What ever happened to traditional values and all of that stuff? You’re from Texas for God’s sake.”

“We are. All of us. And proud of it. We’re as traditional as they come in most cases. But the three of us just happened to have fallen for the same woman, as crazy as that sounds to say out loud.”

More silence with only the sound of the rain hitting the roof and the windows.
