“No! It can’t be eight-and-a-half weeks. I wasn’t with anyone six-and-a-half weeks ago.”

“Like I said, it’s not an exact science. One week in either direction should be pretty accurate.”

But one week in either direction changed everything. Seven-and-a-half weeks ago, I’d slept with Robert. Five-and-a-half weeks ago I’d been with Owen.

Oh fuck. I can’t even be sure who the father is.

CHAPTER 16

Owen

It had been hours since Devyn’s doctor visit, and she hadn’t let me know how it went. Given the way she’d been acting all week, that wasn’t exactly a surprise. But I was still worried something bad had happened, so I finally gave in and texted her.

Owen: Hey. Everything okay? How was the doctor?

It took about five minutes before she replied.

Devyn: I’m okay, yes. It wasn’t anything like I’d thought.

What does that mean?

Owen: The doctor couldn’t figure out what was wrong?

Devyn: She said I’m healthy, yeah.

Owen: Clearly that doesn’t explain why you’re sick. Are you feeling any better?

Devyn: A little. Just tired.

Owen: Okay. Will you let me know if you need anything?

Devyn: I will. Thank you.

Owen: K. Get some rest.

“What’s going on, man? You haven’t answered any of my texts.”

I looked up. I’d been staring at my phone and hadn’t even seen Brayden enter my apartment.

“Sorry. I’ve been busy,” I said, my eyes returning to the screen.

“Bullshit. You’re always busy. What’s going on?”

Putting the phone aside, I let out a long breath. “Something’s not right with Devyn. She’s been avoiding me. It came out of the blue almost a week ago now. She says she’s been sick, but I can’t help but wonder if there’s something more to it.”

“You think she’s playing games with you?”

“Nothing malicious.” I stood and began to pace. “I think she might have freaked out a little after we slept together again. She started to back away right after that.”

“Whoa. Again?” He grabbed two beers from my fridge and handed me one. “Back up. When did this happen?”

I cracked open my Sam Adams. “Last week.”

“Why the hell didn’t you tell me?”

I took a drink. “Sorry, I didn’t realize I had to report to you. Do you tell me every time you have sex?” I glared. “Lately? Iknowthat’s not true. Because you’ve been secretive.”

Brayden narrowed his eyes. “This is sort of like déjà vu, isn’t it? You sleep with her, and she ghosts you? Apparently, you have a magical dick. It makes women disappear.”
