“I can’t believe you’ve been holding out on me like this!” Mia shrieked.

“I know. I’m sorry. Things have been crazy. This conversation was long overdue.”

“You know the saying love at first sight?” she asked. “Well, I fell in love with Owen at firstvoice. From the moment he answered your phone at the bar, I knew he was good people.”

I sighed. “You should see what he looks like.”

“You’d better text me a photo after we get off the phone.”

“I actually don’t have a single photo with him, which is kind of sad. But if you Google Owen Dawson, realtor in Manhattan, I’m sure it will come up.”

“Doing it right now.” Sure enough, within a few seconds, she gasped. “Well, hot damn. He’s perfection, Dev. Look at those eyes. What’s wrong with you? Why aren’t you marrying this dude and having his babies? Are you insane?”

“I’m trying to spare him,” I told her. I truly felt that way.

“This better have nothing to do with Robert,” she scolded.

Just the mention of Robert’s name made my blood pressure spike. He had really gotten on my last nerve lately, the way he wouldn’t let up about me paying him a visit.

“It doesn’t have anything to do with Robert, although he’s a whole ’nother story for a different day.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

“For one, I’m probably leaving soon. I need to be careful who I get attached to out here.”

“Who says Owen can’t follow you out to L.A.?”

That was laughable. “Believe me, Owen isneverleaving New York. He and his friends he owns the building with are so tight—thick as thieves. They’re like one big family. Or a gang.”

“You’d be surprised what someone would do for love.”

My cheeks burned. “He’s not in love with me.”

“Yet. From everything you’ve said, it sounds like he would head that direction eventually, if you don’t sabotage things first.”

Gazing out the window at the smoggy street, I smiled. “Well, he certainly has been the best thing about being in New York.”

She cleared her throat. “Speaking of New York…”

“What?” My heart lurched. Is she coming to visit?

“I kind of have some news,” Mia announced.

“Okay?”

“This is going to come out of left field, but…I’m moving there!”

I gasped. “You’re moving to New York? How did this happen?”

“The gallery is opening a new location, and they want me to manage it. Isn’t that crazy? It only became official yesterday. I was gonna call you today if you hadn’t called me. Can you believe it?”

My pulse raced with excitement. “This is amazing! When are you coming?”

“Sometime in the next couple of months, but I’m gonna have to make a trip sooner than that to find a place. God, I hope we don’t miss each other, if for some reason you’re gone by then. That would be awful.”

My mouth hung open. “Holy crap. This is the last thing I expected you to say.”

“I knew you’d be shocked. Heck, evenI’mshocked that I’m leaving L.A. I’ve never lived anywhere else.”
