“It’s Robert.” He rolled his eyes. “You’d better take it.”

My heart raced as I cleared my throat. “Hello?”

“Where are you?” he asked.

“Why?”

“I’m at your apartment. Your mother said you’re not here.”

Oh no.

My pulse quickened. “You’re in New York?”

Owen’s eyes widened.

“I flew here for tomorrow’s appointment.”

CHAPTER 25

Devyn

“Owen, this is Robert. Robert, this is Owen.”

I couldn’t believe I was doing this—taking two men to the doctor with me. But Robert had stopped film production and flown in all the way from Italy, and Owen… Well, if I was going to allow Robert to go, the other prospective father certainly had every right to be there. Plus, Robert had really put a damper on things last night when he’d shown up. I’d left Owen’s apartment with my undies still damp from fooling around to go downstairs and deal with another man. Who, of course, tried to convince me to spend the night with him at his hotel. By the time I got back up to Owen’s place, his face was so sullen, it looked like someone had run over his dog.

Robert stood taller, squared his shoulders, and extended a hand. “I hope you’ll understand if I don’t say it’s nice to meet you.”

Owen eyed the waiting hand, then promptly shoved both of his into his pants pockets. “The feeling’s mutual.”

Oh Lord. This was going to be loads of fun.

Owen pulled out his phone. “I’ll order us an Uber uptown to the doctor.”

Robert waved him off. “My limo is already pulling around.”

“Of course it is,” Owen mumbled.

“I hope you don’t mind, babe.” Robert put a hand on my shoulder. “But I have a tight schedule this morning. As soon as we’re done at the doctor, I need to hightail it back to the airport. My driver will drop me at JFK and then take you home.”

Owen’s jaw tightened. “That’s not necessary. I’ll get a car for us to go back to the apartment building.” He looked at me. “Is that okay, babe?”

I rubbed my temples. “Whatever.”

Luckily the limo pulled to the curb. I hoped things would improve once we were on our way. But no such luck. The only thing that changed was that I was now sandwiched between the two men, shoulder to shoulder.

“So, Aiden,” Robert said. “What is it you do for a living?”

“It’s Owen. And I work in real estate.”

“Really? I’m thinking about buying a place here in the City.”

I craned my neck to look at Robert. “You are?”

He nodded. “Your mom is here and your sister and brother. I figured we’d be visiting often once you’re back home in California. Plus, I loved the script you sent me from Stephen Solomon, and it’s going to shoot here.” Robert leaned forward to speak to Owen. “Maybe you can look for a place for us? I was thinking a three- or four-bedroom brownstone on the Upper West Side?”

Owen gritted his teeth. “I’ll refer you to someone.”

Robert shrugged. “Suit yourself. But if you pass up opportunities to earn a good commission, you’re going to be living in that shitty building with Vera forever.”
