“Although, with my track record, I might be rambling about it to your daughter.” She laughed.

I’d taken what Mia said earlier today to heart. So even though this was the eve of my doctor’s appointment, I vowed not to let that ruin the night Owen and I could have together. It was high time I gave him the response he deserved to his love proclamation the other night—an honest one. When he’d said the words, I’d freaked out. He deserved better.

I knocked on his door, praying he was home.

He opened, looking amazing as always with his dress shirt unbuttoned at the top and rolled up at the sleeves.

“Hey.” He smiled. “This is a nice surprise.”

“I freaked out after you told me you loved me,” I announced.

He chuckled. “I know you did.”

I shrugged. “I guess it was obvious.”

“Yeah. That’s not news, Devyn.” He stepped aside. “Come in.”

I paced. “Do you hate me?”

“Of course not.”

“Do you wish you could take back those words?”

“No, because I meant them.”

I stopped pacing. “I don’t want you to take them back.”

He placed his hands on my shoulders. “Breathe. I’m not going anywhere. Take your time.”

“Part of me is afraid to let these feelings in—not just yours, but my feelings for you. I keep using my mother as an excuse for my behavior, but...she really did fuck me up, Owen.”

“Seeing her in person, in action?” He shook his head slowly. “It brought home why you’re so guarded. I really dislike her, for the way she treats you and your siblings. And I especially dislike her for making you believe you’re somehow unlovable. I get why you are the way you are, Devyn. You don’t have to explain a damn thing to me.”

“I’m sorry I’ve been such an idiot.”

He pinched my cheek. “Hey, don’t talk that way about my girlfriend.”

A chill ran down my spine. “You introduced yourself to my mother as my boyfriend, but is that real?AmI your girlfriend?”

“Do you want to be?”

For once, I allowed myself to answer honestly, without overthinking. “More than anything.”

“It’s a little backwards that I told you I loved you before I officially asked you to be my girlfriend.”

“Or that I potentially got pregnant during our first night together?” I smiled.

“Or that we had sex before wetrulymet?” He laughed, wrapping his hand around my waist. “I guess we’ve been backwards this whole time, huh?” He brushed his finger along my neck. “How long can you stay tonight?”

“Vera’s babysitting. So…” I sighed. “The one good thing about her being back.”

“That’s all she’s good for.”

I gripped his shirt. “I’m staying as long as you want me to. I don’t want to think about the appointment tomorrow, if I can avoid it.”

“That’s been our problem all along—too much thinking and not enougheverything else.”
