His smirk vanished, a scowl replacing it. “I wasn’t asking.”

Chapter 7 - Nikolai

“Leave me the hell alone.”

I stopped pacing the living room when Giselle’s voice echoed in the foyer. I imagined her squirming and trying to fight Vlad or one of my other men off. She had such a loud voice for someone so tiny.

After she walked out on me last night, I’d had the time to think and concluded that I couldn’t let her wander around Chicago unprotected while she was carrying my child.

Of course, I’d informed Sergey of my decision first, and although my brothers were stunned, Sergey gave Vlad the go-ahead to bring her to me.

“Don’t you dare bite me,” Vlad growled. Their voices were nearer this time, so I settled on one of the sofas in the living room, pretending I hadn’t been worried out of my mind.

Although naïve and innocent, Giselle didn’t come across as an easy woman. She wasn’t going to bend to my will without a fight. I didn’t want to care, but she was pregnant, which meant I had to be gentle with her.

The door to the living room opened, catching my attention. Vlad was the first to walk in and I could tell from the furrowing of his brows that Giselle hadn’t made it easy for him.

Judging from the way she was scratching and hitting his arm as he dragged her in, she must’ve tried to put up a good fight.

“Here’s your angry puppy.” He dragged her towards me and tossed her hand away. “This crazy woman fucking bit me.”

Giselle glanced back and forth between me and my brother, then she glared at Vlad. “I wouldn’t have bitten you if you hadn’t kidnapped me, you asshole. I should’ve kicked you in the balls.”

“Say that one more time.” Vlad’s eyes reddened. My brother didn’t react very well to threats.

Giselle folded her arms and faced him, ready to challenge him without backing down. “I should have kicked you in the balls, and it’s not too late.”

Vlad prowled towards her, but I stepped between them to stop him. “Leave!”

He halted, his eyes sparking with fury. The kid had to learn how to put his anger in check. “You won’t be so lucky next time,” he said, not taking his eyes off Giselle. Then he turned around and walked away.

I turned to Giselle. “I’ll give you one warning: whatever you do, try not to infuriate Vlad.”

She scoffed, her eyes flickering to meet mine. “Or what?” Her throat moved as she swallowed. “You don’t get to decide what I do after you kidnapped me. Why am I here?”

I paused, taking in how beautiful she looked in simple pink sweatpants and a shirt. Her hair was tied up in a ponytail, making her appear even more fragile. “You’re beautiful.”

She frowned. “That’s cringe, and it doesn’t answer my question.”

I grinned. “You have such a smart mouth.” I walked to the minibar in the corner of the living room, grabbed a bottle of whiskey and a glass, then sat on the sofa. “You’re here because I want you here.”

“You kidnapped me,” she said as a matter of fact. “Do you know what that means? You’re a criminal.”

I poured myself a drink. “Darling, I was born a criminal. Don’t forget that.”

She stilled for a moment, and a hint of fear flashed in her eyes. “What do you want from me?”

“Good question.” I gestured to the sofa across from mine. “Sit.”

She raked her teeth through her bottom lips as if to bite back a retort. I was surprised when she actually obliged and sat down. “I’m not a puppy. You can just order around, Nikolai.”

I snorted a laugh. “My brother seemed to think you are.”

She shot a furious glance at me. “Don’t tease me. Tell me why you forced me here or I’ll leave.”

I rested back in my seat, observing every move she made. Giselle tried to put up a brave act, but it wasn’t enough to convince me. I could see how nervous she was from the way she avoided eye contact and fiddled with the hem of her sweatshirt.

For some reason, I wanted to place my hand on hers and assure her I wasn’t trying to hurt her. I was only doing this because I wanted to keep her and our baby safe.
