Eleanor wasn’t prepared for what came next. If she wasn’t a participant, she would have congratulated the spiritualists for their creativity and their boldness. Over the next hour, Scarlet led the wolves through several positions that looked suspiciously like the Kama Sutra.

She would have thought that something like this was reserved for humans only—they called it tantric yoga for couples, or something similar—but the spiritualists had decided to co-opt it into their practices for deepening the mate bond.

It was already challenging enough for Eleanor that her body had been constantly turned on for Blake since their wedding day. Her predicament only worsened as Scarlet led them through theZyphralytis.

She endured position after position, each one bringing Blake’s body tantalizingly closer to hers. They tangled and untangled in a series of movements that Scarlet claimed fused the beasts of lovers together.

Over the hour, Eleanor had to pretend as if she was staring lovingly into Blake’s eyes and listening to the rhythmic beating of his heart. In reality, she was struggling to maintain control of her senses, while her entire body screamed with passion and desire.

Of all the tests they’d gone through together, this was undoubtedly the most challenging for her. She kept her lust at bay, focusing on getting through each pose without doing something she knew she would regret. She deserved an Academy Award for making it through as successfully as she did.

As they approached the final stages of the bonding session, Blake’s body and groin rubbing aggravatingly against hers, she felt the tension build up to the point where she stood on the precipice of an orgasm.

The final pose put them on their sides, chests pressed together, their lips merely inches apart. Blake was so close that Eleanor could feel his heart striking his ribcage like a hammer on an anvil.

Their eyes locked and at that moment, she felt something click in place in her head. Their lips inched closer, ever so slowly, as if both of them were fighting through a thick, invisible force field.

Eleanor closed her eyes, blood racing angrily through her head. She tasted Blake’s breath, felt the hot air from his nose, and heard him inhale sharply. And then…

And then the gong rang again, bringing the session to an end.

Eleanor heard movement all around her, her brain slugging slowly through the mud to process what had just happened. With difficulty, she opened her eyes. Blake was getting to his feet, like all the other men, and was stretching out an arm to help her up as well.

Slowly, she got up, still confused and disoriented. Blake refused to meet her eyes, and suddenly, everything made sense once again. They had almost kissed. They had come so close, only to be saved by the bell.

Eleanor didn’t know whether to be pleased or to weep bitterly. They’d come so close. So close to not caring. So close to smashing through the wall that towered into the clouds, keeping them on opposite sides. They had come so close she’d tasted it. And that was the one thing that hurt her the most.

“Thank you so much for coming,” Scarlet was saying as her assistants rolled up the mats. “Thank you for embarking on this journey with us. We hope that we have been of help, and we hope that you explore those bonds that make you a unique part of our world. Good night.”

Blake and Eleanor lingered behind as other guests hurried out of the building. They had not said a word to each other, and she didn’t want that to change. Not now, not anytime soon.

“Ah, Alpha Blake, Eleanor.”

Eleanor turned around and saw Scarlet standing behind them. She forced herself to smile, but the smile didn’t touch her eyes.

“I trust the session was enlightening?” Scarlet asked, her hands behind her back.

Blake nodded. “It was. My wife and I…um, we benefited a lot from it. Thank you.”

“Delightful. We’ll see you around town?”

“We will.” Blake glanced at the exit and despite the small group still waiting to leave, led Eleanor out.

The drive home was done in tense silence. The air in the truck seemed charged and waiting to explode from the tiniest spark. It was as if the car was filled with kegs of napalm, and there was a fuse burning slowly toward it.

They both knew that there was nothing to say. They knew what they had almost done. Eleanor still didn’t know how to process what had happened.

She didn’t know how she felt about it. Her emotions were all over the place. There was pain, frustration, anger, regret, embarrassment, shame. The one truth she buried deep down was that she had wanted it to happen. She had been willing to cross the line.

How could they go back from this? There was no pretense or deceit necessary anymore. Everything had changed now. They’d both been operating under a shared delusion about the charged energy that existed between them, as if by ignoring it, it would cease to exist.

There was no denying it anymore, they knew. There was nowhere to run to. Their lives had changed forever. Whether it was for better or worse, Eleanor had no way of knowing, and if Blake’s silence was anything to go by, neither did he.

Blake pulled into the driveway of the house and parked the car. Neither of them got out. They just sat still, watching the house through the windshield. Eleanor didn’t need a psychic to know what was going through Blake’s mind.

He was thinking the same thing she was thinking. How would they continue living together after today? How would they go on with the plan they’d put in motion? Eleanor didn’t have the answer to the questions, and she doubted that Blake did either.

He got out of the car first. He rounded it and held Eleanor’s door open for her. They hadn’t made eye contact since their moment together, and neither of them was willing to try.
