‘Oh,’ said Amy quietly, suddenly feeling like the most horrible person in the world. ‘I am so sorry to hear that . . . and for jumping to conclusions.’

‘I just needed to remind her that I am there for her when she needs a friend.’

Amy gazed at his kind face and those eyes that had the ability to capture her. Could he be any more thoughtful? And how awful of her to immediately think the worst. ‘I’m sorry.’ She shook her head. ‘That was stupid of me and extremely insensitive. I should know better than to make assumptions.’

‘Amy, please stop apologizing. Really, it’s fine.’ He put a hand on her arm. ‘Please, it’s fine,’ he reassured her.

‘Hey,’ said Kirsty, appearing at Amy’s side. ‘I am sorry to interrupt but we have the first dance in a minute . . .’

‘I thought Emma didn’t want one,’ said Amy.

‘She didn’t, but then she also didn’t want a piper, or a gazebo and she seems happy so far.’ Kirsty smiled and pointed over at Emma who looked radiant as she stood next to Max.

‘No worries,’ James said. ‘I’ll get the music sorted if you go and get the bride and groom primed and ready to take the floor.’ He leaned over to Amy and whispered in her ear, ‘Let’s pick this conversation up later?’ Then he kissed her gently on the cheek and walked away towards his colleagues.

‘What was that all about?’ said Kirsty, fanning her cheeks. ‘Honestly, the chemistry between you two is outrageous.’

Amy tried to brush off Kirsty’s comments, but she looked over at James who had glanced back at her, and her cheeks began to flush.

‘You should definitely ask him to dance with you later,’ said Kirsty, twirling the stem of her wine glass. ‘Nothing like a wee holiday romance to help you move on from Ross . . .’

Amy wasn’t quite sure how to respond to her sister. ‘What music did you choose for the first dance?’ she said, changing the subject.

‘“You are the Sunshine of My Life”,’ she said drily. ‘A song that would also suit you and James perfectly. Who would have thought this island was such a hotbed for love . . .’

Chapter Forty-Three

It was the morning after the wedding and Kirsty and Amy were sitting on the bench underneath the sycamore tree, slightly bleary-eyed, with their mugs of coffee in hand.

‘You never tire of this view, do you?’ said Amy.

‘Nope, never. It doesn’t matter what the weather is like. This is constant yet always changing too.’ Kirsty took a sip from her mug, reflecting on what a lovely day it had been. ‘It was such a spectacular day, wasn’t it?’

‘Absolutely. I can’t quite believe it’s over. It flew so quickly, didn’t it? Part of me wishes we could do it all again. That was a great idea of Becky’s to get her friend to film it. I know Emma was thrilled about that.’

‘Yes, it was a genius move on Becky’s part. It might not be the best wedding film in the world but at least it captured special moments through the day, and it was so nice that she went around asking people to share a personal message for the bride and groom. Anyway,’ she said, ‘did you enjoy it?’

‘I did,’ said Amy. ‘Especially the dancing.’

‘What’s happening next then?’ said Kirsty in a conspiratorial tone.

‘What do you mean?’

‘With James . . . ?’

Amy smiled. ‘I don’t know but Ididinvite him to come to lunch today.’

‘I’m glad to hear it. I mean, Amy, he couldn’t take his eyes off you last night.’ She watched her sister’s eyes widen in excitement.

‘Really? You noticed?’

Kirsty nodded. ‘Yes, really. Mind you, I would say that you were just as bad.’

Amy giggled.

Emma and Max weren’t due to leave for their mini honeymoon until later that day and Kirsty and Steve were hosting a simple lunch for any of the guests who wanted to come up to Meadowbank.

‘And . . . come on — what areyourplans?’ She watched as Amy’s brows knitted together in a frown. ‘How does he fit with Canada?’
