Let your inner light shine, shine, shine.”

Love’s song has me feeling relaxed and good, I can feel my heart beating to a tune of love, of peace. Her mellow tones penetrating the path that we walk, everything that was looking dreary and glum before is starting to radiate with life. I know that it’s a perception, but that perception grows, and so does the vibration of love inside each one of us and in each one of the beings that might be able to hear her right now. That love will grow and fight the darkness starting to eat away at everything in its path.

“Listen, everyone, listen to the whisper of Hope.

A whisper that can grow and flourish,

That can bend and twist but never break.

Open your mind to the hope that lies within,

Hope that will radiate and shine, shine, shine.

Hope that will radiate and shine, shine, shine.”

The sound is becoming louder as we approach. The only thing we have to guide us is the level of the sound. As Shok explained, the vegetation is becoming denser, and I notice the light is becoming obscured in certain parts. “Let’s stop here,” Trek says as he looks back at us. “Love, you carry on singing, but here, sing into this, as you might need it.” I see Trek handing Love what looks like a horn. She frowns at him but doesn’t hesitate as she lifts it to her mouth and sings.

The sound is projected out louder and wider into the forest. The horn somehow works as a microphone, increasing the volume of Love’s voice.

“Listen, everyone, listen to the whisper of Dream.

Let all your dreams develop and blossom.

Believe in your dreams, believe in yourself.

Expand your horizon and live your dream.

Dreams that will thrive and shine, shine, shine.

Dreams that will thrive and shine, shine, shine.”

Love continues to sing her lyrics, her eyes closed as she feels everything around her, singing to the Fae who can hear her, to the animals, plants that can feel the love radiating in her words. Hope is on her knees, her hands flat on the ground as she sends life and light through the earth to brighten our path and revive that which is losing its energy.

What should I do to help? As soon as the thought enters my mind, I see myself sending light around me, filling the forest with brightness to diminish the darkness that has befallen it. Stretching out my arms, I visualize the light shining through my body, running through my veins, down my arms, and out through my hands, but suddenly, something flies straight into me. Before I can protect myself, it has knocked me off my feet and flat on my back. I lay here stunned as I see Drez suddenly standing above me like an avenging god, his sword shining the same magnetic blue as his eyes. His body is tense and ready to fight, daring the enemy to attack, and instead of being frightened of what is out there, I feel safe, because I know that he will die before he lets anything happen to me.

CHAPTER 9

“What was that?” Shok roars, and then all hell breaks loose. “Duck.” I was just about to sit up, when I feel Drez’s weight on me.

“Stay down,” he mutters.

“What is it?” I ask, trying to see past his bulk but only seeing wisps of something flying around, and then from above, I see it. It looks like a deformed bird of some kind. The dark wings are longer, and it seems to have tiny teeth, and the eyes are a dark red. Lifting my hand, I visualize the light radiating out and shining on the creature. As soon as the light touches it, there is a shrill sound, and then it explodes into tiny little particles.

“Move, Drez,” I say, but he does not budge. Instead, he pushes me back down.

“Let me up. I can make it stop.” But he ignores me. “Argh,” I mutter. If he does not let me do it one way, I will do it another. I take hold of his hand that is holding his sword as he swings every time one of those things gets too close.

“What are you doing?” he asks as I see the light moving through me into him. Suddenly, his sword lights up like a beacon, the blue so radiant that I hear the ear-piercing screeches of the creatures before there is absolute quiet.

“Wow,” Hope gasps, shading her eyes as she sits up once Trek gets off her. Drez looks down at me, a strange look in his eyes as he slowly helps me to sit up.

“You can stop now,” he says, which has me frowning, as I am not casting any longer.

“I’m not doing anything.” I pull my hand away from his, and the light slowly starts to dim.

“Try it again without using your gift. Just touch his hand again while he’s wielding his sword,” Love says from where she is standing before Shok. I frown but lift my hand and touch his again, feeling him tense, but he does not move away. Immediately, the light around his sword starts to strengthen and shine. I look up at his face to see him looking down at me instead of at his sword, a look that penetrates my very soul.

“I knew it,” Love says. “You two enhance each other’s powers.”
