“It’s a girl.” I told him. “We’re having a girl.”

Giovani grabbed my shoulder and shook me, cheering.

“Congratulations, little brother. I love my son more than life itself, but my little girls? I’m telling you now, there’s nothing better than being a girl dad.”

“Yeah.” I just hoped I wouldn’t fail my baby girl because that was my damn specialty. “I asked Pina to marry me and she turned me down.”

“Ah. This is why you spiraled the other day?”

“Yes.”

“Give her some time. It’s all happening too fast and I don’t think Pina had ever thought herself as a mother or a wife. She’s young too. Give her some time to make peace with everything.”

“I don’t think I have any other choice.”

“Not much. Let her come to you and stop getting drunk on Giorgio’s couch. It won’t help you.”

He was right. The other night, for the first time in forever, the booze didn’t numb me, it just made the pain worse. Everything was different now, so I had to be different too, and the way to start was by making peace with the mother of my child.

Chapter 17

Ipaced the entire house, corner to corner. Eventually, Gaspino got tired of watching me march from one room to another and bribed me with some food, which worked for a while, but I soon as I ate it my stomach revolted against it and I ended up throwing everything up.

“Pina, let me call you a doctor, kid.”

“What for?” I asked him after brushing my teeth.

“You just threw your guts up. What if it’s a concussion?”

“I didn’t hit my head hard enough to get a concussion. It’s just the baby. She’s hungry all the time, but doesn’t like most of the food I eat.”

Gaspino stopped and sucked in a breath.

“She?”

“Oh, yes.” I smiled at him. “We’re having a girl.”

“Goddamn it, Pina!” He picked me up and threw me up in the air only to catch me. “I’m having another niece?”

“Yes.”

“Fuck yes! You know, Victoria tells everyone I’m the best uncle. I’m awesome with girls.” I did hear Giovani’s daughter saying that once.

“I’m glad this makes you happy.” I giggled. “I’m excited too.”

“Are you sure you feel alright? I don’t want to take any risks or Garon would try to gut me.”

“I promise you there’s nothing to worry about. I’m just worried.”

“About Garon? Why? Nothing will happen to him.”

“I know.” Goliath and Giovani were there too. “We had a fight and I’ve felt on edge ever since.”

“You know what you have to do if he pisses you off. You call me and I’ll chase him around the back yard for you.”

I laughed at the image.

“Thank you, but I can handle this one.”
