“Better than I’d imagined.” I assured him. “We’re fine.”

Just because things were not complicated enough, Monica Ciccisbeo returned from her trip to the ladies room. I braced myself in case there was more coming my way.

“Hi.” She said to Giorgio, and then her eyes landed on me. “Pina, oh my God! It’s real, you are back!” She was genuinely kind. I shouldn’t have been surprised, I knew Monica to be a nice person, but after her mother’s performance… one can never know.

“Yes, I am.”

“And you are…” she looked up and down at my stomach. I nodded. “Congratulations! You and Garon must be so happy. I hope you are.”

“Yes…”

“What? Why are you being so…” and then she looked at the other side of the room where her father was buttering up Garon, trying to apologize, and her mother was fuming. “Oh, no. She said something, didn’t she.”

“A few somethings.”

Monica looked at me with an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry.” She shook her head. “I really don’t know where she got the idea.”

“Don’t you?” I didn’t mean to sound so cutting.

Monica had the decency to blush. “Look, I’m sorry, but he was fair game.” She was right. God knows he made a play for almost every woman in this town. “It doesn’t matter anyway. He was drunk, Pina, I don’t think he even remembers what happened. You have no need to get all angry with me because I don’t go for taken men. That’s why your sister and I were never friends, we have different philosophies.”

“Yes, you’re right. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have snapped at you.”

“All good. Hey, umm, is it just the two of you here?”

What?I’ve only slept with her two times before I passed her to my bodyguard. Ohhh!

“Are you asking about someone in particular?”

“Nope.” She rolled her eyes. “Just tell me if Santo’s here or not.”

“No, he stayed behind, sorry.”

Monica pushed Giorgio away and took me by the arm, slowly walking away. “He’s not seeing someone else, is he? It’s been really hard to get in touch with him lately.”

“That might be my fault.” I sighed. “Garon is in overprotective mode. He has people on me twenty-four seven and since Santo is his head of security, it kept him busy. Sorry.”

“Oh. Oh, this is great!” She was excited only for one moment. “Damn, I am too wrapped up around that man. It’s overwhelming.”

“I know.” I told her, looking at Garon. Monica followed my look.

“I can’t believe you actually landed him.” She giggled. “You’ve had a crush on him since you were in middle school.”

I blinked. “Where the hell did you hear that?”

“Pina, everyone who knows you, knows you are in love with Garon Caputo. You’ve spent half your life watching him from the distance. No one ever believed you had a chance, but we knew.”

“Danazione!” I cursed under my breath. “Thank you for the vote of confidence. I can’t believe I was so transparent.”

“It’s no big deal.”

I laughed, but it was bitter. “It’s moments like this I’m glad my sister never paid any attention to me because if she’d have had any idea, she would have been all over Garon.”

“She was a cancer, we all knew it, but she was still the daughter of a powerful man so we couldn’t just cut her off. You know how it is.”

“Right.” I nodded. I saw Garon finishing up and coming towards us. “It was nice catching up with you, Monica.” And it was.

“I’m sorry about my mother.” She said again.
