“Good to know,” Faith said, turning her face away from him to smile. The second best thing about being around vampires was her ability to handle them – the man, the myth, the ego.

“I gave him some new memories, checked out his digital camera, and sent him to bed with happy thoughts. He’ll sleep like a baby.”

“Might even wet the bed?”

Lex grinned. “And he’ll be on his way in the morning. While you witches are safe in the knowledge that your secret is safe – thanks to me.”

Faith turned a questioning look on him. “Is this where I am supposed to thank you?”

“That would be now, yes.”

“Thank you,” she said in the sweetest voice she could muster. “Now go away.”

“God, I love gratitude,” Lex said. “So, what are you doing?”

“Thinking.”

“I can see why you’d need to be alone and how hard it must be for you,” Lex replied, wiggling his eyebrows when she narrowed her eyes at him.

“Don’t make me hurt you.”

“I get the feeling you like it,” Lex replied.

“A little.”

“You know, back in the day, I might have made an example of a witch like you.”

“Back in the day, you might have got away with it,” Faith replied, a challenge shining brightly in her eyes.

Lex snorted a chuckle. “You’re lucky I’m not a wolf; a look like that might have got you in trouble.”

“What’s wrong with trouble?” Faith asked. “There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, and getting there can be fun.”

“Or not,” Lex said. “Now, tell me what you’re thinking to save me from doing my vampire thing and delving into your thoughts.”

Faith slapped up a magical shield in seconds. She certainly didn’t want a vampire, that vampire poking around in her stray thoughts. “Give it your best shot.”

Lex considered her for a long moment but didn’t try to pry. She was the wicked witch that so many spoke about but hardly ever met, and he felt a trap in the making. “I believe in privacy.”

“Tell that to the photographer guy you vamped tonight,” Faith replied, raising her eyebrows with another challenge.

“Fair point but a different reason. I did it to protect you…”

“You did it to protect yourself and the pack.”

“That too,” he said, shrugging.

“But, I get the feeling you’re not the goody two shoes you make yourself out to be.”

Lex couldn’t contain the rush of laughter and didn’t try. “I’ve never been called that before, and certainly wouldn’t live up to the expectation of being good.”

“At anything?”

“In general,” he replied his tone a little dryer that time.

“Ships.”

It came out of the blue, and he frowned. “That pass in the night?”
