Faith shrugged. “I have an itch between my shoulder blades; if it could give it a scratch… what the…?” she screeched, spinning in place.

True jumped to her feet, a bottle of beer in her hand, ready and willing to defend her sister. It took a moment for her brain to tell her eyes what she saw as her heart thudded in her ears.

“You said you had an itch,” Lexington said with a devilish grin. He held his hands up at his chest in mock surrender as he looked at True with the bottle. “Tell me you weren’t planning to hit a ghost over the head with that?”

True winced. “I didn’t think it was a ghost,” she rushed out, getting ahead of how stupid that idea had been.

Lex lowered his chin and eyed her with interest from beneath his brows. “So, you don’t believe in ghosts?”

“Of course I do,” True protested.

“Then…?” He motioned to the bottle.

“It was at hand,” True said.

“And your magic wasn’t?” Lex said. He folded his arms and tapped his index finger against his lips, making a show of considering her words. “What kind of a witch are you?”

“The kind that whittles,” True said, slapping the bottle down on the counter and eyeing him with annoyance.

“Noted,” Lex said.

“I have my magic at my fingertips,” Faith said, taking pleasure in zapping him just hard enough for his muscles to contract with pain but not hard enough to send him to his knees. “Don’t touch me again.”

“Also noted,” Lex said, feeling the magic lift and his blood go to work to take away the cramps the witch had caused.

“Why are you here?” True asked.

“I should buy one of those T’shirts that says, I’m only here for the beer,” Lex said, pointing to his chest.

“We’re not open yet,” Faith informed him.

“Sign says you are,” Lex said, grimacing with a shrug.

True narrowed her eyes on the vampire. “You changed it over, didn’t you?”

Lex raised his eyebrows, considering her words once more. “I cannot tell a lie…”

“Sure you can; you do it daily with this alive persona,” Faith said.

“That’s a low blow,” Lex said, rolling his eyes. “Now you really need to take pity on me and deliver that drink I came in for.”

“Or we could bar you,” Faith said with a mocking grin that made her eyes sparkle with amusement.

“I’m a good tipper, and I drinkalot,” Lex said. “Might be better to keep me around. Plus…” he said, holding up his finger to stop Faith from speaking. “I have those vampire abilities that make people forget.”

“Is that a threat?” True asked, placing her hands on her hips and eyeing him with disdain.

“Huh?” Lex looked confused.

Faith snickered into her hand. “I think he meant the tourists, not us.”

Lex pointed at her. “Exactly, paranoid much?”

True wagged her witching finger at him. “Just behave.”

Lex’s hands were back in surrender mode. “Naturally,” he said.

“Good,” True said, happy she got her point across.
