“Sure,” True said.

“Dani says hi,” Hope said as she was wrestled out the door by True.

True lowered her voice. “Dani says hi?”

Hope shrugged. “Just in case, getting things off on the right foot is…”

“Meddling,” True hissed as she descended the stairs and headed for the front door. She waited for Hope to step outside and grabbed her arm.

“Hey!” Hope protested the strong-arm tactics as she found herself marched back towards the bar. “What gives?”

“You meddled the last time with me, and we don’t even know if the Heart’s song is this guy or a passing bloody minstrel.”

“Minstrel?” Hope screwed up her face. “Didn’t they die out in medieval times?”

“Not the point,” True said, getting behind her and shoving her through the door into the bar.

“Okay, stop with the pulling and shoving; I’m still able to walk under my own steam,” Hope grumbled, turning to eye her friend.

True raised her witching finger and wagged it in Hope’s face. “No more meddling; let nature and fate take their course.”

“What course?” Amy asked, curious as to why they were bickering. “What did I miss?”

True sighed. “Hark the heart’s call.”

“Song,” Hope corrected her.

“That too,” True said, sounding miffed.

“Is that a new band or an actual song?” Amy asked, confused.

“It’s the pirate warning,” Hope said.

“It might not be a warning; it sounds … nice,” True said and winced. “If you like that sort of thing.”

“Which you obviously did because, oh look, you’re mated,” Hope said.

“Hold up, hold up,” Amy said, snapping her fingers in front of their noses to get their attention. It worked. “There’s another mate?”

“Yes!” Hope said.

“We don’t know,” True said at the same time.

“Is it Evie?” Amy asked, wiggling her eyebrows.

“Is it Evie what?” Evie asked, sidling up to the group and looking confused.

“Oh, dear Goddess,” True said, rolling her eyes. “Nobody is a mate!” The three witches raised their eyebrows at her. She rolled her eyes again. “Except me.”

“No smoke without fire,” Hope said, shrugging.

“So, if the mate isn’t Evie, and it’s not me,” Amy said. She turned to eye Faith who was still behind the bar pulling pints and looking a little miffed that she wasn’t in the group meeting.

“Oh, dear god, no,” True said. “The poor guy wouldn’t stand a chance.”

“Devoured whole and the bones thrown out to sea,” Hope said, snickering.

“Dani?” Amy said with surprise. “Oh, that’s not gonna go well.”
